U.C. Davis check-up

On Wednesday Micah and I went up to U.C. Davis for my three-month check-up. We ran into an obstacle trying to find a good vein for my iv. I have small veins as it is, but now have the added problem of scar tissue and over-used veins. The first nurse tried three times and was not successful - which meant pain and now bruising for me. :( She called in another nurse, and fortunately he found a deep vein that worked for the iv. Can I say ouch? Very awkward and uncomfortable spot. However, it allowed us to proceed with the ct scan and get it done. My poor arm looks terrible! We made a plan for next time for me to see a specialist first to start the iv before the ct scan.

My next stop was to see Dr. Calhoun, my oncologist and surgeon. He made me feel like a million bucks! Of course he saw me repeatedly at my worst, but I told his nurse I'd slip him a twenty every time I come back to pump me up the way he did. :) We looked at the ct scan images together, and I'm so happy to report that there is still no evidence of any cancer coming back!! My insides looked good. He is having the radiologist look even more closely just to be cautious, but everything looked great. I now only have to come back every six months instead of every three. We are planning on a ct scan every six months for about 2 years, then we'll "go from there"....
What a relief! We left his office encouraged and thankful.

The H.O.W. dinner (Helping One Woman...At A Time) was amazing. On Tuesday, April 20th I walked into Five Restaurant to learn that over 120 women had made reservations for the dinner. Of course my mom and I teared up immediately. I'd estimate that about 1/4 of the ladies were friends and family of mine - mom, 2 mother-in-laws, 1 future sister-in-law, my "besties," and many amazing friends, most from River Bluff. I cannot describe fully just how special I felt! So loved, so supported, so encouraged. I got to speak to the group briefly, which gave me the opportunity to thank those that were there for the many things they've done to support me and my family these past six months. Of course we feel like there's really no way to truly thank everyone enough for all that's been done for us - but we really are so very grateful. Back to the dinner...delicious meal out at a restaurant (something I thought would never happen again just a little while back), time with amazing, special people - it was a wonderful evening I'll never forget. At the end of the evening H.O.W. presented me with a monetary gift, which was a huge blessing as well. It was gift to go toward whatever I choose - which for us is our U.C. Davis hospital bill. God is so good to us! His timing is perfect! He has used so many people in a variety of ways to make me feel blessing upon blessing...I could go on and on...

One of my amazing friends (Molly, whom I job-shared with for 3 years) nominated me to be the H.O.W. "Woman of the Month" back in November when I was recuperating at my parents' house. H.O.W. is a local women's organization (stands for "Helping One Woman...At A Time"). In March, this group voted and I was chosen as the April H.O.W. "honoree." (Not sure if that's the correct word to use...) Tomorrow night - Tuesday, April 20th - is their 2nd Anniversary dinner, where I'll be "recognized." All ladies are invited to attend. It's at FIVE restaurant in Fresno at 6:00pm. To RSVP, ladies (or groups) can call FIVE restaurant and make a dinner reservation at 434-5553. It wasn't that long ago that I couldn't imagine even leaving the house, let alone going to a special dinner with friends and family! zoo day

I decided to brave the zoo this morning, knowing full well it was a spring break day, and it actually didn't get too busy until we left. It was a great mama-son morning with the boys, as well as their buddy Brady and his mommy (Sarah - one of my besties for 16 years now). We had a wonderful morning, but I was beyond exhausted when we left. Of course it was worth it though! I'm trying to do things each week that build my endurance and that slowly get me back into the real world. I'm so thankful for my sweet boys and the pure joy they bring to my life every day.

Children are a gift from God, a blessing from above.

lesson learned

The past week has gone pretty well for me physically. The more faithful I am to my home exercise program, the less pain I'm in and the more progress I make. (duh, right?) I had a pretty good weekend and fairly good day on Monday, until I made a "not great" choice. Skyler wanted something from a high shelf, and instead of waiting for Micah to get home to get it down like I should have, I climbed on a stool and got up on my tippy-toes. Well....the stool fell out from under me and I went crashing into a shelving unit in my closet. I hit it so hard I bent a metal bracket with my lower back. I scraped up my back, including parts of my larger incision, and my leg as well. As a result, I had to lay down for over 24 hours. My lower back is pretty bruised. My doctor checked it today and doesn't think there's any more damage than just the bruising, skin abrasions, and soreness. I have been reminded several times by several people not to climb any more. Lesson learned...I won't. Not worth it. I'm still sore but am moving better. I'm hoping these bruises will heal quickly because it hurts to lay on my back, which is the only way I can sleep. Hopefully my physical therapy sessions this week will help as well. Other than that setback, I have made good progress this past week physically. I have been blessed with a physical therapist (which I know God had planned all along) who has really helped me understand pain, especially chronic pain, in a whole different light. I am thankful for the continuous prayers of so many. They are a big part of what continues to get me through each day.

nagging numbness

As my nervous system, muscles, and body continue to heal, adjust, etc. I have different "issues" with my body. One of the present issues is numb arms. I wake up several times a night or during naps (which are growing more seldom!) with a completely numb arm. The strange thing is that it's not just my right arm, like you'd think, but my left as well. It's definitely affecting my sleep, so hopefully by continuing with my physical therapy and the "exercise homework" my doctor gives me my nervous system will settle down soon.

Other than that, the past few days have gone pretty well. Micah and the boys are battling allergy issues, and Jadon is getting over a head cold, but thank goodness I haven't been affected by any of that. Just doing my best to try to get into a routine somewhat on days when I can, and rest a ton on days when I can do nothing. I still have a lot of those!

physical therapy

First of all, thank you for the continuous prayers that I know are coming from so many people. I feel them, and I feel God working in my body. I see Him working in my life! Thank you!

I am currently going to physical therapy three times a week. When I first started in the beginning of February, it was very basic. I could hardly stand for my right "numb" leg to be touched or moved. Many movements were almost unbearable. Over the past several weeks, however, I have made much progress in therapy. My legs and knees have been retrained to squat again (that was huge for me!), and I have better use of the right side of my body. However, I do have a long way to go. Because of the amount of time I laid both in a hospital bed and on the couch (months!) my body lost so much muscle and natural strength/ability. When I leave p.t. each session I can hardly walk and am in pain. When I do all of my exercises at home the pain continues. My current worst physical "ailment," if you will, is pain that starts in my right shoulder and shoots down through my arm into my fingers. I also have constant pain in all of the right side of my middle/upper back. I sound like such a complainer, I know, but want to be honest about my continuous recovery. What gets me through every physical therapy session without crying/complaining is thinking of my big brother Wesley. I remember as we grew up he'd go through AGONIZING physical therapy every time he had surgery, which was often, and he even learned to walk again more than once. He NEVER complained, but instead encouraged his therapists, doctors, and family like only he can. He is my physical therapy inspiration!

This is my first time blogging myself and I'm pretty excited! I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU (from the Manzos and the Becketts) for the many wonderful meals that have been delivered to us over the past six months. It has been such a blessing and we are beyond thankful. We pray blessings upon all of the family, friends, and people we didn't even know that have sent meals and gift cards. We have been so blessed.

physical therapy underway

Wendy is working hard in physical therapy. It is a big job and most of it is pretty painful. Her physical therapist commented that she has a lot of work to do. Two months in a hospital bed is extremely tough on the body.

Wendy is happy to report that life is slowly but surely becoming "normal". She is finally starting to feel like a wife and mother again. She is beyond thankful to be back in the game of life. She feels like she was away for far too long.

Continue to lift her up in prayer as she works hard to regain her physical strength.

tedious tuesday

Wendy has a long Tuesday ahead of her. She starts physical therapy bright and early. She is nervous and scared to experience intense pain during physical therapy. Please pray for her strength and endurance to work hard without too much discomfort. She has an appointment with her gastrointestinal doctor at 1:30 pm for a colon check-up and possible follow-up testing. Wendy's body continues to work hard to fight infections. An overall prayer for physical health and healing would be greatly appreciated.

More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. back to back doctor visits

Wendy has been to the doctor twice this week. Her first appointment was for a pain checkup and to get a referral to start physical therapy. She was prescribed a second pain and anti-inflammatory patch for her upper right back. She ended up having to go back the following day because she felt like she was coming down with a bad cold. She is thankful she listened to her body because her doctor put her on antibiotics for an ear and sinus infection and a severe red throat.

Please pray…

She is healed from this infection quickly.

Her family does not catch this infection.

Wendy's immune system is strengthened.

Wendy has been "okay" the past few days. She's suffered with nausea in the morning but has not been vomiting. She has a very small appetite, but is thankful that she is able to eat something, as little as that may be. She's been experiencing increased back and incision pain the more she's up and around. Wendy has to choose a physical therapist to help her work on her leg, torso and right arm. She is prayerful that she will be led to pick the ideal physical therapist. Her right leg still has a lot of numbness, nerve pain and discomfort. She's hoping to be able to drive in the next month but has a long way to go. She would appreciate your specific prayers for nausea, back and incision pain and for selecting a physical therapist.

exhausted, sore and so very tired

The day following a long trip in the car and a full day at UC Davis Medical Center proved to take it out of Wendy yet again. Yesterday was physically the worst day for Wendy since her surgery. Wendy is in remission, yes but is still recovering from a most horrific surgery and her body still has so far to go. Please continue to hold Wendy up in prayer. She needs your prayers now more than ever. Even though the severity of her situation, a devastating cancer diagnosis, an extensive surgery, and removal of her right lung is behind her prayer for nausea, vomiting, chronic pain, her colon and left lung, infection and peace and protection for their little family is still greatly needed. Sweet Wendy could really use some extra prayer today.

It is official, Wendy is in remission!

Wendy had an emotional, yet overall positive meeting with Dr. Lara her new oncologist. Wendy was especially anxious to meet with him because of the prospects of chemotherapy, radiation, and or both. At this point both Dr. Lara and Dr. Calhoun are not recommending chemotherapy or radiation! Dr. Lara did say there is a good chance that the thymoma cancer could come back. As scary as it was for Wendy to hear those words she is choosing to believe that it won't. She is choosing to live differently. To live a preventive life and to say, "whose report will I believe? I will believe the report of the Lord."

Because her specific type of Thymoma, subtype B1 is such a slow growing cancer if it does come back it won't happen over night. Because it is a slow growing cancer it would most likely respond well to chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Dr. Calhoun believes that Wendy's continued nausea is due to her unhappy colon and gut. With time and TLC her body will regain a sense of normalcy. Please continue to pray that happens sooner than later. The daily nausea and frequent vomiting is definitely slowing down and adversely affecting her continued overall recovery. Dr. Calhoun also recommended she start physical therapy as soon as possible. At this point her leg function has plateaued. Both incision sites looked good. Her CT scan went well. The nurse that inserted the IV was respectful and skilled. He listened to Wendy's concerns and successfully completed the procedure for her without too much pain. Wendy will return to UC Davis in three months for another CT scan and check up. If everything looks good at that time she will return in another three months and only a chest x-ray will be required.

Wendy needs your attentive and special prayers while she and Micah are at UC Davis today. She has three appointments and is feeling scared and overwhelmed. Pray she isn't nauseous, especially in the morning. She is hoping for good insight from Dr. Calhoun on the nausea and vomiting. She will be meeting Dr. Lara, her new oncologist. She hopes he will be happy with her scans and will not have to recommend chemotherapy. Please pray she has a painless IV and that the CT scan is quick and easy. Pray especially for Wendy during the following times today...

10:45 CT scan
1:30 appointment with Dr. Calhoun

They will wrap up a long day with a long drive home. Pray she is comfortable during the drive and they arrive home safely. Be in touch for updates and pray continuously today.

christmas and progress

Wendy has been adjusting to the lowered pain patch pretty well but is definitely feeling more back and incision pain. She's had to increase her oral pain medication slightly because of this. She has not thrown up in three days and she thanks the Lord for that! She will be heading back to UC Davis next week for a few appointments. She has to meet with her surgeon again, as she hasn't seen him for almost two months. She has to see an oncologist who specializes in thymoma cancer to make a plan for the next few months. She also has to get a CT scan to make sure all is "still clear." She is apprehensive about the long car ride and a very long day. Please pray for Wendy's nausea to continue to lessen every day, her back and incision pain to lessen as well, and in advance for the long day she'll have at Davis next week. Wendy has yet another stye in her eye. Pray for healing. Pray she doesn't get anymore styes!

Wendy, Micah, Skyler, and Jadon want to say THANK YOU once again for all who took part in making their Christmas amazing. They also want to say thank you, thank you, thank you for all of the meals that are being delivered. It is such a blessing for them and they are truly grateful.

moving right along

Wendy met with her local general practitioner today. Nothing was accomplished but the conversation was promising and Wendy has a lot of "next steps" to take. Her doctor is going to prescribe a lower dose Fentanyl patch. The high dose might be what is making her nauseous. Her doctor also felt it was time to start weaning her off such a strong dose of pain medicine. She has been on the Fentanyl patch for pain management for over two months. She is extremely scared about the prospect of being in a lot of pain if the dose is too low. Please pray the dose is strong enough to ward off pain and at the same time lessened enough to eliminate nausea.

She is going to make an appointment with her gastroenterologist. She has a list of questions to ask him and she might need to have an endoscopy done. She is anxious about ANY procedure. Just talking about the test put her on the verge of tears during today's appointment.

They are waiting for biopsy results to know more about the severity of Wendy's C. difficile. It might actually not be the cause of her nausea. She doesn't have any other major C. difficile symptoms so her doctor thinks it might be on the verge of being gone on its own. The biopsy results will be more specific than the blood test results she received last week.

She is making an appointment with her local oncologist to have some much needed dialogue, post surgery. She will also need to start getting scans done every three months to make sure the cancer is completely gone and is staying away.

Her wound is not infected. It has opened a bit so pray that it closes on its own and doesn't get infected. Scar tissue underneath the wound is causing it to tighten and open. Pray for that wound. Oh that awful wound...be gone!

health and joy for all they know and love.

Wendy transitioned home in time for Christmas. It has been a big adjustment. She's had some good days but overall she still doesn't have much energy. The boys long to climb on her, play, and engage with her non-stop. Unfortunately Wendy just doesn't have the energy to fully devote herself to them yet. It has been hard for Wendy to not pick up at home where she left off. She is definitely still in major recovery mode.

Wendy has been showing signs of complications recently. She saw her local doctor and had some tests done. Blood tests show she has Clostridium Difficile again. Wendy first had C. difficile while in the hospital. C. difficile is an infection of the colon caused by C. difficile bacterium that occurs primarily among individuals who have been using antibiotics. It is the most common infection acquired by patients while they are in the hospital. She is on antibiotics to treat the C. difficile but is having an extremely hard time swallowing and keeping them down. She continues to have little to no appetite, vomits often, and is continuing to lose weight. She is hoping to get an appointment with her local doctor tomorrow. In addition to antibiotics, she needs to know what she needs to do to get better. Wendy is definitely not well right now. Pray her doctor can give her some good advice and help her get healthy as soon as possible. Wendy's state of "not-well" is exhausting.

Wendy was discharged from her home health nurse because she no longer required wound care after the Wound V.A.C. was removed. Unfortunately in the last couple of days her wound has started to show signs of possible complications and isn't looking as good as it was when she was released from her nurse's care.

Micah could use your prayers for strength, patience, and endurance as he is Wendy's full time nurse, cares for the boys, and runs the household. Pray for Skyler and Jadon that they understand that there mommy is healing and still can't give her full self to them. The Manzo family is still in a valley. Pray for them.

miraculous

It's been a rough week for Wendy. She's had little to no appetite, has struggled with extreme nausea, and has vomited a lot. She's lost a great deal of weight in only a few days time. She's been so weak that she's been unable to walk.

Wendy had a follow up appointment with her local doctor to discuss some tests she had done last week. The doctor found some irregularities in her colon. They are running more tests. The irregularities might be causing her lack of appetite, nausea, and vomiting. She hopes to get the results by the end of the week.

Wendy is asking for a miraculous intervention. She is desperate for good health. Please pray for miraculous healing over Wendy's body.

Wendy is hopeful that she will get to return to her home with her husband and boys by January. As incredible as the homecoming will be it will be complicated. Wendy is still in a lot of pain and is restricted from doing ANYTHING except for eating, healing, and resting. Grocery shopping and making meals will be out of the question.

There are already a lot of kind people signed up to deliver dinners. It would be even more helpful and wonderful if they could have a dinner delivered every single night during the month of January! Let's continue to help make this transition back to "normal" life as easy for Wendy and her family as possible. This recovery has been more complicated, extensive, painful, and trying than Wendy could have ever imagined. She definitely thought she would have been back on her feet by now. Your continued prayers are much needed and appreciated more than you could ever imagine. Pray for her health, her body to be strong and to heal quickly. Pray for her mind and soul that it is protected from doubt or sadness. Pray for her closest support system, her husband, sons, mom, dad, and brothers. relief please

Wendy has been extremely nauseous and has had an almost non existent appetite for the past two days. A wound specialist came today and removed dead skin from her wound. The specialist is ordering a special enzyme treatment to speed up the healing process.

Wendy was excited to watch The Office tonight. It's good to know some things never change.

Please pray for Wendy to have less pain and a BIG appetite tomorrow.

garage sale/holiday boutique for wendy

Friends of Wendy are hosting a Garage Sale/Holiday Boutique to raise money for her and her family. The event is scheduled for Saturday, December 19th from 8 am to 1 pm. It will take place at the Murrietta home, 750 East Indianapolis in the Old Fig area, just East of Christmas Tree Lane. Please contact Sarah at murrietta_s@madera.k12.ca.us if you would like to donate old items or sell new items. A large amount of clothing and other items are being collected by Sarah's sister-in-law in Southern California. She is most likely going to need to rent a U-Haul to get everything to Fresno! It promises to be a packed sale. Hot chocolate and other tasty treats will be available for purchase the morning of the event. Please mark your calendar for this special sale!

wound v.a.c. out

Wendy's home health nurse was able to remove the Wound VAC today. The wound is sealed with gauze and tape at the present moment. Tomorrow the wound will be reassessed to see how it does with just the simple closures. The home healthy nurse will check it again on Wednesday and put a "sealant" along the wound to help keep it protected. Wendy is THRILLED. It is the first day since October 19th that she is free and not connected to any wires, tubes or cords. Wendy continues to have tough mornings. Her nausea and pain seem to be the most severe when she first wakes up. Pray for those mornings to get easier.

Wendy walked to the stop sign at the end of her parents' street today without a walker or cane! What an incredible accomplishment this is! If only her physical therapist could see her now. It can't be confirmed, but there is word that she might have even done a little celebratory jig around the sign. She didn't use her cane while walking around the house today either. She shuffles slowly, the potential for her legs to buckle out from underneath her is still a possibility. She continues to exhibit incredible strength!

Wendy was thrilled to finally get to see her grandparents today. She hasn't seem them since October 18th. They came to visit and "babysit" her while her parents attended a luncheon. They enjoyed a peaceful afternoon together. It was a wonderful visit and she loved every minute spent with them.

The tentative plan is for Wendy's Wound V.A.C. to be removed tomorrow! Please pray that all goes as planned. Pray that the incision site looks good. Pray it is the perfect time for removal and that is removed without pain. Pray for clarity and guidance over the home health nurse that will remove it.

Wendy is at home, resting after a long and painful day.

The nurse had a difficult time getting Wendy's IV started. As a result Wendy has a bruised and sore arm. Because Wendy only has one lung they didn't sedate her as much as she or they would have liked to. She felt a great deal of pressure during the surgery. It has been a painful recovery since this morning. Due to an overall exhausting and physically demanding day her large incision site has been causing her a great deal of discomfort.

She is on a new antibiotic that also has an anti-inflammatory property. She is hopeful it will help reduce any potential swelling.

Pray...

Wendy sleeps well tonight.

Her road to recovery is free from any additional bumps.

Wendy's family can rest peacefully tonight, knowing today's surgery is over.

out patient surgery

Due to complications Wendy will have out patient surgery tomorrow at 8 am. Please pray that she feels less anxious and scared tonight. Pray for decreased pain and discomfort and a quick recovery from surgery.

Wendy is NPO tonight and tomorrow morning. She can't take Motrin until after her surgery tomorrow. Consequently she is in a lot of pain right now. She has to wake up very early for pre-surgery procedures. She will be sedated with twilight sleep anesthesia, which means she will be awake but not completely conscious. She is anxious about being awake. Pray she doesn't experience fear or anxiety during the surgery. Pray for strength for her remaining lung during surgery.

Pray for healing over her numb leg and large incision site. She is experiencing a lot of setbacks due to the many complications that have occurred this past week.

Micah, Skyler and Jadon were misdiagnosed at the walk-in clinic. They do not have staph infections. All three are on antibiotics for a viral infection.

better half of the day

Yesterday was a better day for Wendy than the four previous. She was nauseous, in a lot of pain, and had no appetite for the first half of the day. The second half of the day was a little bit better.

She had her Wound V.A.C. changed yesterday. The nurse that changed it is in-training. The process wasn't the most comfortable or very speedy. Wendy is worn out from being learned and practiced on by nurses and medical assistants. She welcomes all veteran medical professionals from here on out.

Wendy enjoyed a wonderful, homemade Mexican food for dinner. She sat in her recliner and her mom and dad joined her, sitting on either side. Her appetite was back in the evening and she was finally able to enjoy a meal.

Her left eye is still causing her a lot of discomfort. Warm compresses are helping. She hopes this stye situation is over soon.

Micah took Skyler to his pediatrician yesterday. It is confirmed that Skyler does have a staph infection. Skyler's pediatrician put him on a less invasive, lower dose of antibiotics. Micah and Jadon both have staph infections now as well.

four brutal days

The last four days have been awful for Wendy. She has been lying down in her bed for four days straight. Her leg is numb again and her incision site is extremely uncomfortable. The incision site feels like a piece of stiff rope wrapped around her body. Lack of movement has made it feel like the site is being tightened and pulled. She is experiencing muscle atrophy in her legs again. She has been in a tremendous amount of pain, and she is exhausted and nauseous. She has experienced some major setbacks. Complications that started in the hospital are getting worse at home. She hopes to have an appointment with a local doctor tomorrow.

Wendy has a stye in her left eye. It is excruciating. She is using a warm compress to help soothe it, but it hasn't helped much.

She hasn't had an appetite for the last four days. She lost five pounds in 48 hours. Wendy is supposed to be eating 1800 calories or more, every day. Severe nausea has made it hard for her to even swallow a small pill. Today was the first time anything has sounded somewhat edible to her in over four days. She was craving spaghetti from Di Cicco's. GB made the run and brought back two sides of spaghetti. Wendy actually ate a healthy serving of spaghetti. Please pray for Wendy's appetite and for feelings of nausea to go away. It is crucial she eat.

Wendy is trying to avoid and block any negative thoughts. At this point she is extremely frustrated. The last four days have really set her back. It's annoying and hard on one's heart and mind to work so hard to get to a certain point and then experience regression so rapidly.

Skyler doesn't have chicken pox. However, after Micah, Skyler, and Jadon experienced a three hour wait at the walk-in clinic the day after Thanksgiving, Skyler was put on antibiotics for a staph infection. Wendy is being quarantined from them for the time being. Skyler has an appointment with his regular pediatrician tomorrow. Being away from them is breaking her heart.

Wendy and Micah experienced a lot of holiday traffic on the way to UC Davis Medical Center yesterday. She suffered from nausea and pain on the way there and back.

Her appointment with Dr. Calhoun went well. Pathology reports continue to show that all cancerous tumors were removed. Dr. Calhoun is referring her to a new oncologist. The new oncologist might suggest chemotherapy and/or radiation. At this point Dr. Calhoun doesn't think either are necessary. He truly believes he got ALL of the cancer. She will have scans taken every month for awhile. At this point they aren't worried about the cancer coming back. Her Wound V.A.C. is continuing to do good work and it might be removed as soon as next week. Wendy's main incision site is looking great and her rate is down.

On their ride home Micah held her hand and told her not to worry about the cancer coming back. He said it is important they enjoy this moment, her being healthy.

Wendy's next appointment is next Wednesday at UC Davis Medical Center at 10 am. She is already not looking forward to the long and uncomfortable drive.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Manzo and Beckett families!

Wendy and her family send an extra special thank you to Uncle Kenny and Aunt Kay for preparing a Thanksgiving meal for the Manzo and Beckett families. They slaved in the kitchen for two days preparing a delicious and extravagant meal. Wade went and picked the meal up and brought it back to the Beckett's house for their little family to enjoy. Wade topped off the meal with his famous mashed potatoes and gravy. It was a beautiful Thanksgiving Day spread.

Unfortunately the day didn't go quite as planned. Wendy was exhausted from the previous day and in bed experiencing a tremendous amount of pain. Another reason she was in her room most of the day was because it is thought Skyler might have the chicken pox. At this point it is best they keep the boys away from Wendy. Despite it all, Wendy has so many things to be thankful for. Too many to list. And even though she had a rough day she is so thankful to have spent Thanksgiving at home and not in the hospital.

Wendy was super tired today. Wendy and GB had a rough nights sleep, bad and weird dreams kept both of them up. She is hopeful to get to bed early tonight and to have peaceful dreams. GB is working hard, tending to Wendy's every need. She needs prayers for good rest and strength. Pray for GB.

Micah and the boys came and visited in the afternoon. Their little family of four got to eat lunch around the kitchen table. It had been a long time since they had enjoyed that simple pleasure. Skyler was visibly the happiest of all to be sitting together eating as a family.

Wendy is a strong lady! She switched from the quad cane to a regular cane today! She is really pushing herself physically. She is so anxious to become more independent and regain her strength. She used the walker later in the evening when her body was just too worn out to rely on the cane.

She didn't suffer with nausea today as much as she has the past few days. She actually made it all the way until 7 pm without getting nauseous and needing medicine.

Little surprises and dear gifts have been quietly and without any interruptions left for Wendy over the past few days. FED EX dropped off a special flower delivery this afternoon. These little surprises have brought her so much joy. Wendy's family is so thankful that people are continuing to love and support Wendy from a distance. It is still SO important she not have any visitors.

Wendy and Micah head to UC Davis Medical Center tomorrow for the first check-up of many. It is a long and painful ride for someone who is recovering from such major surgery. Please pray continuously throughout the day for her comfort, peace, and safety.

Micah called Wendy today to share a Jadon quote. In the car, on the way home from The Village, Jadon said, "Dad, I think I need a CAT scan." He hears way more than anyone knows!

Wendy's discomfort and pain was definitely up today. Her Fentanyl patch expired today and she could definitely feel that its effectiveness had worn off. GB changed the patch and Wendy started to feel more relief as the day went on. She is still experiencing nausea and headaches.

Her home health nurse came today. It was a long visit. Reviewing Wendy's extensive medical history, paperwork, and changing of the Wound V.A.C. made for a busy, exhausting day. The nurse's visit interfered with her time with Micah and the boys. She was pretty sad that she didn't get to see them much. From here on out her nurse will come in the mornings. The afternoon and early evening will be reserved for time with her family.

Tolerating and accepting pain has been tough on Wendy mentally and physically. She has had to learn how to differentiate and accept a level of pain she can tolerate versus a level that leaves her debilitated. Her mental strength was tested yet again yesterday. She had a scary moment around 1 am. She was having difficulty catching her breath and she panicked. She was on the verge of hyperventilating, but thankfully was able to talk her self into a state of calmness and could re-regulate her breathing.

Please continue to pray for Wendy. Her recovery is not easy and she is appreciative of every prayer for healing and strength.

Wendy had a low key, quiet day. She was groomed and pampered from head to toe by her sweet mama-nurse. Her mom washed, dried, and combed her hair, pedicured her feet, and helped her take a bath. She finally got to take a semi-normal bath with the help of a hand held shower nozzle that her Uncle Kenny installed for her. Wendy's entire grooming process took over two hours because she had to break for so many rests, as she is still in a lot of pain.

Wendy had her best and longest sleep yet, last night. Unfortunately, she woke up in a lot of pain this morning because she slept through her pain medicine doses. At this point she is asking for prayer, which is better for her body, sleep consistently or wake up and take pain medicine? She is perplexed over which is the lesser of two evils.

Wendy didn't see the boys today. She was exhausted from the previous busy and emotional day and all three of the Manzo men are now on antibiotics. It was better for everyone to take a day off. Micah was busy cleaning the house and hadn't gotten around to telling the boys that they wouldn't see their mommy today. As Micah cleaned the floors the boys played and scurried around at his feet. Skyler who usually plays well independently was following him around, carrying a letter puzzle. After awhile, Micah noticed he wasn't letting up and was actually trying to communicate something to him. Micah sat down with Skyler. Skyler took the letters from the puzzle and spelled out "M - O - M". As Wendy retold this story tonight she couldn't help but cry. Skyler is truly blossoming! She is excited to get to see them again tomorrow.

Wendy experienced severe hiccups today. She had three bouts of hiccups that lasted almost an hour each time. Please pray the hiccups don't come while she is sleeping and they are gone by tomorrow. By the end of the day her stomach and throat were really starting to hurt.

Wendy and Georgia are back home in Madera. Thirty-three days in a hospital is a long time. The Becketts and Manzos say THANK YOU from our innermost being. GOD IS FAITHFUL. This will truly be a memorable Thanksgiving because there is no place like home.

Georgia looks cute in her pink scrubs and Wendy beautiful in her new lounge wear. Wendy has already started her strenuous physical therapy and will work very hard everyday. A home health nurse will come every Monday, Wendesday, and Friday to change the dressing on her Wound V.A.C.

Wendy and Micah will head back up to UC Davis Medical Center this Wednesday, November 25th for a checkup with Wendy’s surgeon, Dr. Calhoun. They will have to go back to Davis on a regular basis for checkups.

Wendy was able to see her husband Micah and her two handsome sons, Skyler and Jadon today. WHAT A REUNION! Both boys cried when they saw Mommy and wouldn’t let go of her. It was a great day at 3021 Forest Lane. The roses smelled better, the grass was a little greener, and the blue sky radiated God’s love. Wade and Wesley will be home Wednesday. Both are so anxious to see Wendy and the rest of the family.

May this be your best Thanksgiving with you and your family. We must not take anything for granted. Material things will pass away. Let’s all count our blessings. We truly have much to be thankful for: God, family, friends and health.

lollipops and potatoes

Wendy slept so well last night. She only woke up once for pain medicine. She was up at 7:30 am, nauseous and in a good amount of pain. Breakfast was cut short because of the nausea. She went back to bed and an early morning nap really helped. Wendy is so happy to be home. She is still in a lot of pain but being home is what she needs to fully heal.

Micah and the boys came by at noon. Seeing them was surreal. She felt like she was having an out of body experience. Both boys walked in slowly. She asked, "can I have a hug?" Jadon ran over first. Just inches away, he stared at her face for almost three minutes. It was as if he didn't really believe it was her. She enjoyed being so close to him, studying him, almost as if she was re-learning his face. He was interested in the Wound V.A.C. and stayed close. She called Skyler over. He laid his head on her shoulder and squeezed her tighter than he ever has before. He then went over to GB and cried while hugging her. His tears were joyful, relieved tears. Wendy told him to come back. He climbed up in the chair with her and rested on her for a long time. Wendy said they've grown so much in a month's time. Skyler is blossoming. Jadon did a dance for Wendy and shared about Halloween and what he wants for Christmas. Wendy enjoyed every second of the time they spent together this afternoon being reunited, catching up, and getting adjusted to being together again.

Both boys love Wendy's walker. They pushed the buttons, climbed up and on it, and practiced walking with it.

Wendy enjoyed a special moment with Jadon today coloring up at the table. He drew a picture of her and she drew a picture of him. His drawing of Wendy captured her perfectly, two eyes, nose, mouth, lollipop, and potato. You know Wendy, never without a lollipop and potato.

Both of the boys are battling a little sickness and are on antibiotics. It was important that Wendy get to see them today, for her heart and emotional healing. However, it is even more important that she stay healthy. Micah took the boys back home for the rest of the day and evening. Once home tonight Micah called Wendy and told her how different the boys seem already. They seem peacefully content and are radiating happiness. It was a good evening at the Manzo home.

It was thought earlier this week Wendy might be discharged this coming weekend. Wendy tried to sit patiently with the thought of going home so soon. She thought about what it would be like to be home every minute she was awake. Her patience and her ability to trust was fully tested. After a thorough assessment this morning her team decided she was ready to go home today. At last, Wendy was cleared to go home.

The discharge process was quite extensive. Wendy went home with a Wound V.A.C., prescriptions, and orders for a home health nurse (who will start coming on Monday). Wendy will be using a walker, a quad cane, and a wheel chair.

The drive home from UC Davis was exhausting, painful, and stressful. Wendy was completely worn out by the time they arrived back in Madera. A balloon arch spanned across the front porch, waiting for Wendy's arrival, welcoming her home. She will be staying at her parents' house during the next weeks or months, while her recovery is still so critical. She has yet to see Skyler and Jadon because they are both sick and on antibiotics. At this point she is just SO thankful to be out of the hospital. She said a recliner has never felt so good. She has beyond enjoyed being home, looking at all of the framed family photos, especially the ones of the boys.

Doctors orders firmly state that Wendy is to have NO visitors. It is imperative she stay away from germs and that she get A LOT of rest. She has a long way to go and her recovery is just beginning. Please allow Wendy and her family time to readjust. Wendy will continue to share information through this blog and will communicate when she is able and ready to start receiving phone calls and visits.

Wendy will miss the amazing nurses, doctors, therapists, and staff that cared for her for the past month. Nurse Sandy from the ICU came to visit Wendy one last time early this morning. She sent Wendy on her way with a quote that truly captures the epitome of what Wendy has become. You thought Wendy was gentle, kind, and generous before the surgery? You just wait.

The River Bluff community came together tonight to support a great school and a beloved teacher. Micah, Jadon, and CB were present to personally thank so many for the love and generosity that has been bestowed upon Wendy and the Beckett and Manzo families.

four walks

Wendy had a better day. She went on four walks, two with the walker and two with the quad cane. The pain management team continues to fine tune her pain medicine. Her Fentanyl Patch is being bumped up from 75 mg to 100 mg. They've added a pain pill to combat the shooting nerve pain she is experiencing in her right quadriceps as feeling is starting to return.

Nurse Sonya and Nurse Jerry from the ICU came and visited Wendy this afternoon. She is so grateful for their continued support and care.

Wendy was a trooper today, despite the fact that she is suffering from severe hemorrhoids. Without divulging a lot of information about the hemorrhoids, simply stated, Wendy really needs your prayer for healing.

She experienced terrible nausea at two different points during the day. It is thought that extreme pain or not enough food in her stomach, or both, is causing her to be so nauseous. Wendy is allowed to request a snack at any point during the day. Unfortunately her nausea really affected her appetite today and she didn't request any snacks and she didn't eat any dinner. Because her TPN line is gone now, it is imperative she eat enough.

Her Wound V.A.C. was changed today. The doctor that changed it thinks she will most likely go home with it. In his opinion her wound is just still too large. There has been conflicting opinions about if she will go home with it or not. Please pray she doesn't go home with it. One less hassle, one less home health nurse coming and going from their home.

Wendy's PICC line was redressed today and it is looking good.

Wendy had three special visits today from dear nurses. Nurse Jen and Nurse Suzy from the ICU dropped in to check on Wendy and let her know how much they continue to think about her. Nurse Jackie and her daughter Nicole brought their service god, Mongo to meet Wendy. The nurses at UC Davis Medical Center continue to bless and impress Wendy and her family.

Pastor Roger Leach, a family friend of the Becketts and the pastor that preached at Micah and Wendy's wedding reception came up to UC Davis Medical Center to pray for Wendy today. He felt that God spoke to his heart to come pray over Wendy and to represent and reach out on behalf of all churches, congregations, and pastors that are so fervently praying for her. He made the long visit to pray with Wendy for two short minutes. Wendy's family was so appreciative that he made the long trip and yet that he respected Wendy's need for rest and only stayed in her room for a brief moment. Wendy's family thanks him and prays that he be abundantly blessed.

GB and Wendy received the most exciting and unexpected phone call today. Wendy's cousin Janae called from Greece. They were touched by her phone call and it made both of their days.

hospital date night

Wendy didn't have a great sleep last night. Her roommate was up most of the night in a lot of audible pain. Thankfully her roommate was moved and Wendy is enjoying her own room again. As a matter of fact Wendy's room was especially chosen for her. The room is at the end of a hall and has more privacy than most. One of the charge nurses, Nurse Jackie requested the room for Wendy when she was transferred down from the ICU. Nurse Jackie's daughter stayed in the exact bed and room that Wendy is currently in a few years back. Nurse Jackie's daughter is living with a brain tumor. Her brain tumor is inoperable and she is not hire able. Her daughter is married and doing well right now, but please keep Nurse Jackie and her daughter in your prayers. Thank you God for special treatment for special Wendy.

Wendy's is free at last from her IV pole! Her PICC line now has a saline lock on it. She will go home with the PICC line, but it is currently not in use. She feels like a free woman.

Wendy is no longer on any antibiotics. She had all of the Steri-Strips (except for a couple) removed from her large incision site. No more daily Betadine cleanings and changing of Steri- Strips.

The pain management team really thinks they have "nailed" Wendy's pain medication regiment. Her pain ranged from a 5 to a 6 1/2 yesterday.

Wendy went on three walks yesterday. She and Micah went on the final walk of the night together. While they were walking GB set up a special dinner date night for the two of them. She placed two hospital dinner trays across from one another, put a pillow in the chair for Wendy and said, "dinner is served" when they returned from the walk. They got to sit and eat dinner together, alone, with no interruptions. GB joked, "sorry I couldn't find a candle." That first dinner date out in the real world will be so sweet, but probably just as special as last night's in the hospital.

Dr. Calhoun has officially recorded in Wendy's orders that she can now go outside in a wheelchair to get some fresh air.

Wendy's PT introduced her to a quad cane yesterday. Wendy walked twenty feet with the cane. She has to be taught how to walk with the cane so that she doesn't injure her knee. Her knee is very vulnerable at this point. Injuring it could cause arthritis down the road.

She will have a blood panel done today. Dr. Calhoun wants her to have more red blood cells. She is slightly anemic. She will start receiving Vitamin C and iron today.

Due to the fact that Wendy is enjoying and craving good foods like yogurt, granola bars, and pizza the TPN line has been removed. It is now up to her to get all of the nutrients, protein, and calories she needs from food. One less line!

Please pray for a dear nurse at UC Davis, Nurse Kerri and her family. Nurse Kerri's sister adopted two boys from China. They just recently returned from China with their youngest son, Jessie. Jessie is two years old and needs to have surgery to repair his club feet. Please pray for this dear family and little Jessie's surgery, his healing, and his adjustment to his new family and home.

"Sonya, my beloved day nurse from the ICU, just came up to visit for the 2nd time. She took my mom back down with her and is sending me back up pizza - pepperoni, mushroom, and olive, my favorite kind - for a treat. I'm hungry for my afternoon snack and oh, what a great surprise. YUM!!!! It doesn't take much these days to thrill me. Yep...really learning to appreciate the little things."

god on the mountain

Wendy has had two roommates in the last 24 hours. Debbie was admitted into Wendy's room at 1 am early this morning. Debbie was in a lot of pain. Wendy asked her what her name was and asked if she could pray for her. Debbie was grateful for the prayers because she understands the power of prayer and asking Jesus for help. Debbie, a mother of four and a grandmother is fighting lung cancer. She started running a fever after having part of her lung removed and had to be readmitted into the hospital. She will have to have more surgery and chemotherapy down the road. Wendy and GB loved the conversations they shared with Debbie today. She was a wonderful woman and rejuvenated their hearts and souls in the middle of a hard day. Your prayers for Debbie would be greatly appreciated. Wendy's second roommate is in a lot of pain. She is crying, moaning, and hasn't stopped making noises since she entered the room. Please pray she gets comfort soon and doesn't keep Wendy up tonight.

Wendy was in an incredible amount of pain ALL day. Her pain was at a 6 1/2, consistently today. The nurses don't want her pain to be above a 5. So once again they are reworking her pain medicine. They are increasing the strength of her Fentanyl patch and dropping the Norco. She will start taking Dilaudid, a narcotic analgesic every three hours.

Wendy went on three walks today. Her last walk was at around 9 pm. Her last walk was by far her longest and most successful walk. She was in so much pain today that she really had to fight and struggle to complete the first two walks.

There is talk that the Wound V.A.C. might come out before she goes home. Pray the wound closes up enough that she can go home without it. A nurse cut some extra tissue out of the wound today. It is looking so much better.

Wendy's TPN line is delivering an ever lower potency of nutrients. Wendy had a pretty good appetite tonight. She told one of her nurses, Nurse Jackie that she didn't think she would make it to dinner without a snack. It was pretty close to dinner time and "snack time" had long since passed in the kitchen. Nurse Jackie gave Wendy her own personal snack. Wendy enjoyed a pre-dinner snack of tasty strawberry cheesecake Yoplait and a granola bar thanks to generous and selfless Nurse Jackie. Wendy's nurses have been amazing and constantly go above and beyond to take care of their patients. She ate most of her raviolis and a tiny green salad tonight. Praise God for Wendy's returning appetite!

Dr. Calhoun's nurse, Nurse Valerie suggested Wendy take one of her walks in the ICU tomorrow. Visiting the ICU and getting to see the nurses will most likely give her a positive and much needed boost. She is trying so hard to stay positive but she is in a serious amount of pain right now.

Her hands, arms, feet, and legs are still extremely swollen. She continues to take potassium and Lasix to help relieve some of the swelling.

GB would like to send out an extra special thank you to Joella for giving her a tasty green salad and chicken. GB was in Wendy's room ALL day today because of the constant pain Wendy was in. GB was so grateful to have packed the salad and chicken for lunch, because there wasn't a moment for her to leave today.

While Wendy was working through her pain today with her eyes closed she quietly started singing a song. She could only remember a few of the lines. Her Uncle Kenny sang the song when Wendy was a little girl. The words brought her comfort today. He is still great, He hasn't diminished even though she is going through such a tough time. The words were from the song, "God on the Mountain". Enjoy the sweet words that brought an even sweeter Wendy comfort today.

Wendy continues to show slight improvements. Unfortunately she battled with nausea again today. GB and Wendy have decided that it is the large Super Motrin pill cut into four (still large) jagged pieces that is causing her so much trouble. Wendy is hoping to take three smaller, round 200 mg Super Motrin pills instead of the one large 600 mg pill.

Three walks today! The nurses encourage her to engage in conversation while she is walking. She was interrupted mid-sentence today and had to end her walk early because her heart rate was up significantly high. Even though she didn't show any outward physical signs of exhaustion or difficulty breathing, her high heart rate was definitely elevated and her system stressed. Wendy must use oxygen when she goes on longer walks.

She is back on solid foods. She will receive the last bag of nutrients through her TPN line tonight at 10 pm. The nutrients will continue to flow until 10 am. Wendy must eat enough fat, protein, and nutrients on her own. Pray she continues to have an appetite and eats enough to make her body function effectively.

Wendy has started to experience some feeling in her numb leg. The feeling is uncomfortable unfortunately. The numb part of her leg is throbbing and hot. At this point she'll take what she can get.

She has been fighting a headache and chills before bed for the last two nights. GB thinks she needs more sleep. Wendy didn't get much sleep the night before and no nap during the day. Thankfully she got a short nap today.

Wendy is very anxious about losing her PCA Infusion Pump tomorrow. The pain management team has issued her a standing prescription for pain medication to be available to be put into her PICC line if she is in a lot of pain. She will continue to receive pain relief from the Fentanyl patch, Norcol, and Super Motrin.

Wendy had a light bulb moment tonight. After receiving her daily heparin shot in her stomach her eyes flew open and she said, "now I know why these heparin shots hurt more every day! It's because I'm getting less pain medication every day." That's some cruel clarity for you.

Her white blood cell count is normal and her blood levels are returning to normal and looking better every day.

Please pray for Thomas, Leslie, and their two daughters who are in their early twenties. Thomas is fighting leukemia at UC Davis Medical Center. He has been in the hospital multiple times. If the current treatment doesn't work he'll probably have a month to live. Thomas needs a healing MIRACLE. GB said she would have Wendy's prayer warriors pray for Thomas because we hurt for those in pain and believe in prayer.

Today's update was written by Wendy's dad, CB.

DAY 28

"Because He lives We can face tomorrow. Because He lives all fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future. And life is worth living just because He lives.

Friends and Family,

Georgia and I are still with Wendy at the hospital. I will return to Madera tonight to care for the grand boys for the week. Georgia will remain to love and care for Wendy until she is home. Our HOPE and PRAYER is to be reunited by THANKSGIVING.

Simply put, Wendy must be able to do the following on her own before she is released:
* proper bowel functions
* consume solid foods to sustain her without the IV nutrition
* walk on her own with walker
* no IV’s for medicine or pain

She will go home with a Wound V.A.C. and a home health nurse for assistance. The most beautiful nurse in the world, her mother will care for her. Weeks and weeks of physical therapy will follow.

Our family loves you so much. Thank you for support and prayers. In His time, in His time He makes all things beautiful."

pickles please

Wendy was extremely nauseous again today. When she is this nauseous it really sets her back, making it impossible for her to eat and walk. She couldn't even focus on the directions her PT was giving her because she was so on the verge of throwing up. She ended up vomiting in the late afternoon and finally felt some temporary relief.

The pain team is continuing to taper off the pain medicine she can receive through her PCA Infusion Pump. She is now receiving Norco every two hours. Four hours in between pills was just too long. She is still in an extreme amount of pain.

Wendy's dad read her more comments from the blog tonight. She just listened and cried. She is so humbled and overwhelmed.

Wendy unintentionally sat in a chair for four consecutive hours today. Her feet were swollen beyond a pregnant person's feet. Her mom had to rub her feet before she could even attempt to stand up. When her feet and legs swell to this extent it takes a long time for the pain to go away. Wendy requests special prayer for her swollen feet and legs because it is so painful.

She is still receiving nutrients from the TPN line, but only at night, which has made her hungrier during the day. She received soft foods tonight, but because she was so hungry she requested something more substantial. She asked for a turkey sandwich but because they were out ended up eating a hamburger. She was hesitant that the hamburger might be too rich, but her nurse encouraged her to try it. Boy was she glad she ended up with a hamburger because it came with pickles. She piled all four pickles onto that burger. The pickles tasted like pure perfection. Tonight's pickles reminded her of Jadon. Whenever she goes through the drive-thru with the boys Jadon always requests a cheeseburger with NO pickles. He continually reminds her, "no pickles" all they way up until she orders. When she places the order she always asks Jadon, "you want ten pickles right?" The story made her laugh and then cry. She went on to say that she believes the Lord helped her block the boys out of her mind until now. In the last day and a half she has really been struck with an intense pain in her heart and cannot stop thinking about them. She misses her husband and boys so much.

Wendy is hoping she can continue to walk, eat, drink, and have happy bowels. It is imperative she has success in all four areas. Please pray that she improves daily so she can go home soon. The days are passing more slowly now that she is aware.

Hunter was released from the ICU today. He is now in a recovery room!

Pray...

No nausea and no swelling!

She gets relief from Norco and the reduced amount of medicine she receives from the PCA.

The following days of recovery pass quickly so she can go home.

corners being turned

Wendy's bowels woke up around midnight which made for a long night with little sleep. Pray her gastrointestinal system is healing and will work well from here on out.

Today was a better day than yesterday. She only vomited once and luckily her pills didn't come back up. Her nurse commented that her ability to keep the pills down was quite a talent. Wendy told her it wasn't talent, but prayer. She prays before the pills are delivered, as she swallows them down, and while she waits for her stomach to settle once they are down.

She started on yet another new pain medication today, Norco. This specific narcotic pain reliever is used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Norco and 600mg of Motrin will be given to Wendy every four hours. She gets very uncomfortable before the four hour interval is up so she is still able to access pain medication from the PCA Infusion Pump.

Wendy went on three walks today. She also met with both her OT and PT. Her OT is teaching her how to move, bend, and complete every day activities independently. Because of her large incision site she is unable to bend her torso. She was taught how to use a grabber tool to pull up socks, clothes, and reach for items instead of bending over.

If Wendy gets good sleep tonight and has a productive morning she will get to go outside for the first time in 27 days! A nurse suggested Wendy and her dad walk over and grab a warm beverage from Starbucks. Her nurses are hoping the trip outside will inspire her to get out of the hospital even more quickly.

Wendy had her Wound V.A.C. changed today. The incision site continues to heal and get smaller. The nurse said that they will start changing it every three days. She won't have to have it changed again until Monday. Wendy is thankful for the extra day because the removal and re-installation process is very painful. Wendy will most likely go home with the Wound V.A.C.

Wendy's roommate went home today. Her nurse is going to try and prevent a new roommate from moving in in the next 24 hours and limit as many interruptions as possible so she can get some rest tonight.

An extra special thank you to Nurse Scarlett for taking such good care of Wendy today. She was like a little mother hen to Wendy, extremely attentive of her needs and protective over her opportunities to sleep.

CB and GB really feel like Wendy turned a corner today. They are seeing slight improvements. They all continue to do the best they can and are thankful for their family and friends' heart felt prayers and selfless gestures.

the busy hospital

Wendy had a long day yesterday, two consecutive days of nausea is really starting to get her down. The doctors are working hard to find pain medicines that work, yet that don't stop her gastrointestinal system from functioning.

GB said last night, "don't go to the hospital if you want to get some rest." The vital checks, x-rays, breathing treatments, rounds by doctors and surgeon, and countless other interruptions prevent anyone from getting any privacy or rest. They've been at this hospital thing for almost a month now. They need your prayers for relief and stamina.

Wendy's large incision site is looking great and the Wound V.A.C. continues to help the smaller incision site heal more quickly.

From an emotional standpoint Wendy is hanging in there. She only cries when she talks about the boys. She never complains and is trying very hard to take as little pain medication as possible. She is starting to get used to constant pain.

UC Davis patient, Hunter had a better day yesterday. They had him in an almost sitting position in his bed. It was obvious he was pleased with the upright position, it was almost as if his facial expression was saying, "wow!" He looks much better than last week.

The River Bluff Spaghetti Dinner and Honorary Mrs. Manzo Bake Sale is only a week away. The event is set for Thursday, November 19th. All proceeds from the spaghetti dinner sales will go to River Bluff. All proceeds from the bake sale will go to Wendy. Spaghetti dinner tickets are $5, bake sale items will range in price. tummy troubles...again

Wendy is off of foods again. Her gastrointestinal system is not working and her bowels are even more asleep. Before Wendy can even think about going home she has to start eating, drinking, and going to the bathroom. When Dr. Calhoun's nurse listened to Wendy's stomach today she couldn't hear anything which means there is no movement. She will have an x-ray of her stomach taken today. She will receive all nutrients through the TPN line for at least four more days. All nutrients will be given at night so she has an appetite during the day.

Nurse Sonya, one of Wendy's ICU nurses came up and visited her today. Wendy cried when she saw her and asked for a hug. She told Nurse Sonya, "you don't know how much I miss you." Her visit really lifted Wendy's spirits.

The potassium pills are hard on Wendy. Pray they will give it to her in a liquid form through her TPN line.

a bittersweet shower

Wendy woke up feeling not quite right this morning. It wasn't until 2 pm when she vomited A LOT did she start to feel better. Swallowing large pain pills and trying to eat when she has no appetite are most likely the two factors that caused her to be sick. Wendy's chart now requires that all of her large pain pills be split into a smaller, more manageable pieces.

Wendy got a shower today. It was a bittersweet experience. She had her Wound V.A.C. removed before taking her shower. They cleaned the open incision site in the shower and let the water run through it. By the time Wendy got out of the shower she was in a tremendous amount of pain, completely pale, and was shaking uncontrollably from shock. They wrapped her up in a blanket, put her wet hair in a towel, and put her back in bed for an hour. Once she started feel better a surgeon came in and replaced her Wound V.A.C. He did a tremendous job. He was firm, confident, and extremely gentle. It was the easiest and least painful Wound V.A.C. replacement yet!

The TPN tube that delivers proteins, nutrients, and fat is now being tapered. She is now receiving the power packed fluid at a slower rate and for fewer hours in the day. She is drinking a "health shake" with every meal. It takes her 45 minutes to an hour to just take one bite of food. She needs prayers for her appetite to increase and for her stomach to not be upset.

She has started to swell again. Last night her face started to swell and today her arms, legs, hands, and feet started to swell. They aren't sure why. She is receiving Lasix and Potassium again. As soon as she started back on the two drugs her extreme heat flashes returned. She is most likely allergic to one of the two. Unfortunately swelling is more problematic than extreme heat flashes so she'll have to endure them until the swelling goes down.

The ultrasound of Wendy's legs came back with a very positive outcome, no blood clots. Now for the next test. Wendy will have an Electromyography (EMG) test done during one of her check up appointments after she's been released. The test will determine if the nerve damage near the femoral artery is temporary or permanent.

Wendy was feeling better by the end of the day. She was comfortable in bed wearing her freshly laundered little pink booties when she told her mom to head back to her room and get some rest. A better ending to a rough day.

The mother GB just recently met, Letha from Modesto had tremendous new to share today. Letha's youngest son Mark who had both kidneys removed last Saturday has shown great improvement in the last few days. He gets to go home tomorrow! He will receive in home care and will report to the hospital daily for dialysis appointments. GB met and has committed to pray for yet another family in need. A 17 year old named Mark is at UC Davis trying to find a ventilator that works well for him. He has had severe health issues his entire life. Pray he responds well to treatments and finds a ventilator that brings him relief. GB asked if she could add their family to Wendy's blog. They were so appreciative and thankful to know that a large group of prayerful people would be remembering them.

four walks

Wendy's physical therapy assignment today was to go on four walks. Wendy went on four walks! She doesn't qualify for physical rehabilitation while at the hospital because she has full use of her arms and can take a few steps with a walker. She will most likely qualify for out-patient rehabilitation when she gets home.

Her right leg is still numb. They did an ultrasound of both legs today, looking for blood clots or any other potential problems.

Wendy's PCA Infusion Pump will be removed tomorrow. She will no longer be able to give herself pain medicine. She started on a Fentanyl patch today. The pain medicine from the patch will be absorbed by the skin and transferred throughout her body via her fat cells. They are hopeful the patch will work well for Wendy because it moves through the body in an even and continuous manner.

The Wound V.A.C. is working well! The incision site is shrinking, looking less red, and is successfully being healed from the inside out. Nurses continue to be Betadine, a broad spectrum topical microbicide on Wendy's large incision site to protect it from infection.

One of Wendy's favorite ICU nurses, Nurse Stacie stopped by to wish her well and to say goodbye before her two week vacation time started. Nurse Stacie put together an extremely thoughtful gift for Wendy while she was still in the ICU. Wendy was told she couldn't wear makeup, deodorant, lotion, etc., during her surgery. Wendy misunderstood and thought she couldn't have personal necessities during surgery AND while she was in the ICU. After it was quite clear that Wendy would be in the ICU for awhile, Nurse Stacie brought Wendy a little purple purse filled with travel size toiletries, lotions, and nail polish. An incredibly generous and thoughtful gesture from a very special nurse. Wendy and her family wish Nurse Stacie and her family a fun trip to Disneyland.

Wendy is feeling less anxious today. Her family's presence today after a long, sleepless, frightening night brought her much needed security and relief.

Wendy is being weaned off of her TPN line and will continually receive less calories and nutrients from it. She needs to start eating more food. She will now receive 6 ounce health shakes that are packed with calories and nutrients at every meal.

GB met and prayed with yet another mother today. Letha from Modesto has three grown sons that all have a genetic disease called Polycystic kidney disease. All three men have suffered with severe health issues as a result their entire lives. Letha's oldest son Keith is waiting for a kidney and liver transplant at a hospital in San Francisco. Her youngest son is at UC Davis Medical Center in the ICU, recovering after having both of his kidneys removed last Saturday. GB said she'd have Wendy's prayer warriors add Letha and her sons to their prayers. Letha said she would call her church and have Wendy's name added to the prayer list. The power of relationships, prayer, and God's love continues to spread.

new floor, hard night

Wendy had an awful night and experienced her lowest point since being in the hospital. She is having an extremely difficult time making the transition to a new floor. The change has really affected her emotionally, mentally, and physically. Dr. Calhoun knew it would be a hard transition, but didn't know it would be this tough on her.

Wendy didn't sleep at all last night. New nurses, sharing a room, delayed food trays, unfamiliarity of a new space all made it impossible for her to relax. Dr. Calhoun said she desperately needs sleep. Without sleep she won't have enough energy to adequately complete her physical therapy. She also needs to start eating more. She needs calories for much needed energy.

She has absolutely NO set date for going home. Her recovery will be evaluated day by day.

CB met up with and checked in on a few of the people you have been asked to add to your prayer list. Hunter had his tracheotomy today. The procedure went well. He is heavily sedated at the moment. Vincent smiled for the first time today since his accident on September 27th. His sisters said this last weekend was very scary and they almost lost him. CB shared with them that he though for certain it was the power of prayer that got him through the weekend. Two more of his sisters will be arriving from Holland on Saturday. CB, GB, and Sylvia met up for breakfast at the Kiwanis Family House this morning. The three prayed for a little baby named Madison that had surgery at 5:30 am. They encouraged Sylvia to not be afraid to pray and talk to God. Sylvia was excited to report that she read the first two chapters of John last night.

The Kiwanis Family House is a sanctuary for families that are at UC Davis Medical Center with hospitalized relatives. CB got a chance to meet and thank the founder of the Kiwanis Family House today. Wendy's family has been so thankful for a close and comfortable place to end their long days. They are also thankful and blessed by the many incredible encounters they've had with people like Evonne, Michael, and Sylvia at the Kiwanis Family House. The Kiwanis Family House is filled with opportunities for conversations that open the doors for God's love to be heard and accepted.

Wendy's move from the ICU to the 6th floor was emotional. She had a hard time saying goodbye to her nurses and the ICU staff that has cared for her with such compassion and love for the past 22 days. Wendy has a neighbor in her new room. Her neighbor is expected to be in the room for at least 2-3 more days.

Dr. Calhoun expressed his deepest regards to Wendy's family tonight. He thought she would have been home by now. Unfortunately too many complications arose.

Please pray for Wendy tonight, her first night in a new room on a new floor. She is trying very hard to be brave, but she still wishes she was in the comfort of the familiar and attentive ICU. There was a food mix up tonight and she had to wait until 7:30 pm for her dinner to arrive. A delayed food tray would never have happened in the ICU. Pray for her comfort, strength, and peace tonight.

Wendy is leaving the ICU! She is holding a "one way ticket" Marissa made for her, waiting to be transferred to the recovery floor.

I just received a phone call from her sharing the tremendous news! Her voice was shaky, yet it was very much Wendy. Sweet, gentle, and loving as ever as she shared her good news. She is being released from the ICU this afternoon and will be transferred to a recovery room on the sixth floor.

She shared that she'll have to write a book when she gets out of the hospital and title it, "My Life in the ICU". She said she didn't remember anything about the first week after surgery and it is probably a good thing. The second week she remembers bits and pieces and started to feel the pain. The third week she has experienced tremendous physical pain as she feels her incision sites, struggles with stomach issues, and itchiness, among the array of other pains. She is also experiencing tremendous emotional pain, being away from her sons, husband, family, and friends. She misses her life and home. She said she has made a mental commitment to get home as soon as possible.

She is anxious about the move out of the ICU. She is afraid of sharing a room with another patient. She is fearful that the nurses won't be able to get to her in time if she needs their help. She is worried the nurses won't hear her pushing a button for help. Please pray that Wendy feels at peace and the transition from the ICU to a recovery room goes smoothly. Pray the nurses she has on this new floor are just as amazing and attentive as the ICU nurses were. Pray Wendy heals with accelerated speed and that the next step in recovery is her going home. Pray she goes home soon!

pushing past the pain

The stomach x-ray Wendy had done yesterday showed no blockage. Wendy's surgeon, Dr. Calhoun has decided to start weaning her off of narcotics. Narcotics can cause severe issues with the stomach, intestines, and bowels. The narcotics seem to be disagreeing with Wendy in a bad way. Dr. Calhoun said Wendy is going to have to teach her body how to deal with the pain and learn how to push through it. She will start to receive Super Motrin and Percocet every three to four hours while the narcotics are being removed from her system.

Wendy is no longer receiving breathing treatments every six hours. She will only receive two in a 24 hour period from here on out. Her lung is getting stronger and is staying healthy!

She got six hours (not all at one time) of sleep last night.

Wendy is still not receiving nearly enough calories, vitamins, or minerals from food. She will continue to receive nutrients through an iv line. She still has blisters on the back of her tongue but her mouth and throat are not as sore.

Her Wound V.A.C. is going to be changed every other day rather than every three days. Changing of the Wound V.A.C. is not a fun process and is quite painful. She and her family are always relieved when the process is over. Her incision site where the Wound V.A.C. is inserted is shrinking and is looking better every day.

It is imperative Wendy continue to push herself to eat food, walk, and sit up. All of these activities will aid her body in waking up her gastrointestinal system. In order for the stomach, bowels, and intestines to work, they must be harmonious. There is disarray if they don't all work together. Wendy is definitely experiencing painful disarray in her tummy right now.

CB and GB continue to meet people that are lost, broken, scared, and are in the fight of their human lives at UC Davis Medical Center. They met Silvia, a 70 year old Apache Indian at UC Davis for neck and back surgery this morning in the Kiwanis Family House kitchen. After talking for awhile the conversation turned towards their respective children. The Becketts shared about Wendy, her cancer, surgery, and fight to recovery. Silvia shared about her son, John that she lost so many years ago when he passed away at seven years old. Her next statement opened the door for CB and GB to help change her life. Sylvia said, "I wonder if I'll ever see him again." The Becketts assured her she could through eternal salvation made possible by Jesus Christ. After prayer and more lengthy conversation Sylvia accepted Christ into her heart and exclaimed, "I'm going to see John again!"

CB and GB say, "Wendy is improving and her physical strength is coming back. We were able to witness to another soul today and have the blessed opportunity to spread the word and love of God. We have much to be thankful for. Praise the Lord."

Wendy's gastrointestinal system is completely healed and free from distension and pain.

Wendy needs prayer for her stomach and bowels. Her abdomen is extremely swollen, distended, and her bowels have stopped working again. She is on a lot of heavy medication to help with her bowels and the nurses are hopeful the medicine will kick start things tonight.

Wendy went on two walks today. After her second walk she started feeling extremely itchy and nauseous. Up until today she has been able to get back to her room and have anti-nausea medicine put into her iv line in time to help the feeling pass. Unfortunately today the medicine didn't kick in in time. She felt better after she threw up but then was extremely anxious. Thankfully she didn't aspirate.

Wendy got to connect to the Internet today. Her eyesight is blurry and she can't focus very well so Sarah read some of the blog comments to Wendy. Wendy was overwhelmed by the many comments, passionate prayers, the upcoming bake sale, the "lend a hand" link on her blog, green and gold ribbons, and "A Heart to Mrs. Manzo". She cried often when listening to the comments, in between sharing how she knew each person. Aunts and uncles, cousins, grandparents, family friends, students, parents, new and old friends, fellow teachers and educators, and complete strangers. She can't believe that people are following her progress with such dedication and are staying in touch on a daily basis. The time on the computer spent listening to the comments allowed her to escape her constant pain and engaged her in "non hospital" thoughts. What a blessing everyone's words have been to her today.

She continues to eat very slow and only takes a few bites at each meal. The nurses encourage any eating she does and are glad she's moving away from needing nutrients through an iv line.

Wendy got her hair washed and braided this afternoon. You'd think she'd been to the spa. She was so appreciative.

Micah and GB are back at UC Davis this evening. Micah and Wendy got to spend some time together this evening just the two of them (alone time including nurses of course).

GB met a fellow mother on her way back to the Kiwanis House this evening. After talking for awhile the two discovered that both of their daughters were in the ICU. Wendy recovering from thymoma cancer surgery at age 30 and Baby Isabella fighting to survive born at 28 weeks, weighing in at 1 pound. Both mothers promised to pray for one another's daughters. Wendy prayer warriors you are encouraged to pray for Baby Isabella, her mother, and all babies and parents in need.

Fellow ICU patient, 18 year old Hunter, in the hospital with severely acute injuries from "car surfing" needs your prayers. His mom asks for very special prayer this evening. Hunter will be having a tracheotomy this coming Tuesday, 11/10 at 11 am. As with all surgeries, a tracheotomy involves potential complications and possible injury from both known and unforeseen causes.

Vincent from Holland and a patient in the burn unit is showing some improvement. CB got a chance to visit with two of his sisters today. Praise God for improvements.

CB has plans to meet up with recommitted Evonne and new believer, Michael in the next couple of days. He will share some love filled literature and pray with them both. Please pray that the days since they both accepted Christ into their hearts have been overflowing with God's presence.

Unfortunately the distension, bloating, and pain in Wendy's stomach is back. An x-ray of her stomach was taken this morning. They hope to get to the bottom of it today. Wendy's pain is at a 5 right now. Her face, arms, and legs finally look less swollen. Up until today her stomach was looking more normal every day. Unfortunately today, her stomach is extremely distended.

Her blood pressure and blood sugar levels look good.

Marissa and Sarah are up visiting Wendy today. They brought her the laptop so she can read the amazing comments that have been left for her. Wendy's mom watched from behind as today's entourage; Wendy, Marissa, Sarah, nurses, a physical therapist, lines, tubes, and carts slowly shuffled down the hall. It requires a lot of assistance for Wendy to take her daily walks. Family, friends, nurses, and therapists cherish the walks. They get to offer words of support, cheer her on, and rejoice in her successes.

Wendy had a rough morning. Her catheter reached its useful life span today. She also had to have her Wound V.A.C. taken out, the incision site cleaned, and a new Wound V.A.C. installed. The entire process was painful and took a lot longer than it should have, three times as long.

Her morning walk wasn't as successful as she'd hoped for. She was still in a lot of pain from the Wound V.A.C. cleaning and re-installation. She was disappointed and extremely emotional after she couldn't walk as far as she had the day before. Her mom, nurses, and physical therapist reassured her that she is doing a great job and making good progress. She is really down on herself right now.

Wendy had a better evening. She sat in a chair for her longest stint yet, from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. There were points where she was in a lot of pain and extremely exhausted but one of her favorite nurses, Suzy, pushed and encouraged her to continue to sit. She was communicating well and had clear thoughts while she was up. She talked a lot about Skyler and Jadon. For the first time today she started some of her sentences with, "When I get home..."

Suzy is Wendy's night nurse this evening and Wendy is her only patient. Suzy promised Georgia that Wendy would get a good sponge bath tonight and some extra TLC and attention.

Wendy's mom is so excited about the laptop's arrival tomorrow. She really thinks the perfectly spoken prayers, incredibly supportive gestures, and loving comments from Wendy's many fans and followers will really give her a much needed boost.

The removal of Wendy's catheter was done in time and didn't cause any damage.

three walks in one day

Wendy walked three times today and one of which was her furthest distance yet! She walked all the way to the surgery waiting room. Wendy's mom was beaming! Good, consistent walking is what will move her out of the ICU and into a regular hospital room.

Wendy is still experiencing extreme hot flashes. They are working hard to try and figure out why the extreme heat is back.

The PCA infusion system is still working well for Wendy as she self manages her own pain medicine intake. She can access pain medicine as often as every 15 minutes. She has waited up to 1 1/2 - 2 hours between infusions if she is sleeping. Even though she is waiting longer in between infusions to access medicine it is still problematic because once she is awake she is in an extreme amount of pain and requires a lot of extra pain medicine. The pain management team continues to encourage Wendy to move away from iv pain medicine intake and move towards taking it orally. Moving away from pain medicine by iv also helps eliminate some of the extra tubes, lines, and wires.

Recently Wendy has taken it upon her (very teacher like) self to give each new nurse a synopsis of the previous 12 hours. Wendy starts off each nurse's new shift by saying, "I know you probably know all of this but..." It's good to know she's still got it.

Wendy's surgeon, Dr. Calhoun gave Wendy the following homework assignments.
1. Get enough nutrients, and start eating more every day.
2. Walk, walk, walk.

The nurses continue to amaze, bless, and gently care for Wendy and her family. Go nurses go!

heat, nausea, and pain

Wendy's three main complaints and consequently main prayer requests today are for relief from, heat flashes (yes they're back), nausea, and pain.

The extreme hot flashes she is experiencing now are a little bit different. Instead of her face turning red it turns pink and her lips and mouth get white. She feels like she is drenched in sweat, but is actually quite dry. A box fan keeps her room extra chilly.

They increased her beta blocker dose and her heart rate and blood pressure is going down.

She has been extremely itchy lately. Itchiness is extremely common during recovery from a BIG surgery. Benadryl seems to help.

Her white blood count is good and is at 14.

The pain management team is starting to transition Wendy towards taking oral pain medication, so that less is given through an iv.

She got her face washed, hair washed and combed, had lotion put on, and her teeth brushed. She felt very refreshed afterward.

Both of Wendy's walks today were cut short today because of overwhelming feelings of nausea. The nurses immediately give her anti-nausea medicine because they are still very apprehensive about her vomiting.

Wendy's mom visited fellow ICU patient, Hunter's mom today. Hunter's mom asks you pray for his continued progress. She also asks for prayers for his recovery, that it goes smoothly and that there are little to no setbacks. Hunter's nurse was in the room when Georgia asked Hunter's mom about any prayer requests they had. Hunter's nurse inquired, "what is a prayer request?" Please pray that Georgia and Hunter's mom can witness to Hunter's nurse through their actions, conversations, and that there are more opportunities for mention of prayer, peace, hope, and God.

The Wound V.A.C. was successfully installed into her incision site. The incision site it is 8cm long and 3cm deep. The Wound V.A.C. is located near the groin right where her leg bends and connects to the hip area. Its presence causes pain and discomfort when she is sitting or is up moving around. It has already sucked out an adequate amount of liquid.

Wendy walked a couple of times today despite the addition of the Wound V.A.C. After one of her walks she got really hot. Her body temperature is not quite regulated yet. She was given a popsicle to help her cool down. Awhile after she had eaten half of the popsicle it was time for a blood sugar check. The insulin test results showed her blood sugar was too high so she had to receive two units of insulin. She's decided to stay away from popsicles for the time being and has requested ice water next time she is hot.

Wendy has handsome photos of Skyler and Jadon hanging on a small board in her room. The nurses continually ask and make comments about the boys. Wendy's family has observed that the nurses genuinely love and care for Wendy and want her to engage in conversation about her life so she feels connected to the boys and her world outside of the ICU.

From the mouth of Wendy, "I'm feeling my pain more every day and have run into so many bumps along the road to recovery. However I am so grateful for the incredible team of doctors (ESPECIALLY NURSES) who are blessing my life every day." She specifically asked that "ESPECIALLY NURSES" be capitalized.

Wendy's pain subsides.

She has good walks tomorrow.

The Wound V.A.C. does its job well and doesn't cause Wendy too much uncomfortable pain.

Georgia gets good rest tonight, stays healthy, and is filled with strength as she spends her days in the ICU by Wendy's side.

green for turtles, gold for elvis

The River Bluff PTA is selling green and gold ribbons to raise money for Wendy's medical care, recovery, and her little family. It was decided that the $1 ribbons should be gold and green because they symbolize two things that Wendy loves, turtles and Elvis Presley. Green for turtles and gold for Elvis. Honorary Mrs. Manzo ribbons can be purchased at the front desk in the River Bluff office.

River Bluff PTA is hosting its annual Spaghetti Dinner on Thursday, November 19th at River Bluff Elementary. A bake sale will be set up at the dinner. All proceeds from the bake sale will go to Wendy and her family.

banana bites and beta blockers

Wendy's heart rate has been elevated since the surgery. Dr. Calhoun has been watching it closely. Today it was decided that she start beta blockers to reduce the effect of physical exertion on her rate rate.

Wendy is now on an unrestricted diet. Food from outside of the hospital can even be brought in! Wendy had three bites of a banana and four bites of scrambled eggs for breakfast. A big deal for Wendy!

Her morning walk didn't go so well. She got very tired, grew pale and had to end her walk short. She didn't walk as far as she has in the past. Wendy was feeling very discouraged and anxious about her inability to walk as far. Her nurse reassured her, telling her not to compare her abilities or successes between am and pm or from day to day. Not every walk will be great and that is OK.

Wendy's Wound V.A.C. has yet to be inserted into her smaller incision site. They had to unpack and repack the gauze again this morning. Please pray it is inserted before the gauze in her incision site needs to be changed again.

Wendy's family has grown close with the family of Hunter, the 18 year old fighting for his life in the ICU at UC Davis. Both families check on one another daily. Please continue to pray for Hunter's body. Pray for a healing miracle. Pray for strength and peace for his mom, Denise, sister Hailey, and his other family that have been in the ICU continually. Continue to mention Vincent, Ron, and Michael in your prayers as they struggle with pain and disease. Pray for healing over their bodies. The ICU is a very scary place. These people need all the prayers they can get.

I slept a total (non continuous) of 7 hours last night, that's a jump for joy.

I have wonderful nurses. A sincere and BIG thank you to all of my nurses. A special thank you to Nurse Miguel for getting me a female nurse from an adjoining ICU in the middle of the night.

thymoma cancer free

Wendy had a painful, yet productive day. She experienced many anxious moments, feeling overwhelmed, and fearful.

Dr. Calhoun gave Wendy the overall surgery results today.

As of today, pathology reports show that ALL thymoma cancer has been removed. Praise JESUS people!
Dr. Calhoun reconstructed a synthetic diaphragm with a GORE-TEX graft. It was essential the diaphragm be rebuilt so her other organs would remain in place.
The lining around her heart was removed and replaced.
He is optimistic that all feeling will return to her right leg. It will take time though.

Wendy will have one more debridement procedure tonight. Nurses had to unpack and repack her incision site with gauze four times over a 24 hour period. Negative pressure wound therapy with a Wound V.A.C. will be inserted tomorrow and will replace the debridement process. The Wound V.A.C. will continue to remove dead cells, excess fluid, and infection. A Wound V.A.C. uses negative pressure to promote healing in an open area. The Wound V.A.C. foam dressing and tube will only need to be replaced every three days. Removal of the saturated gauze and repacking of fresh gauze was extremely uncomfortable for Wendy. Even though the Wound V.A.C. will add yet another tube to Wendy's already tube, line, bag filled body it will be a welcomed alternative to having gauze upacked and repacked every 6 hours.

Wendy had real food delivered to her room tonight. Spaghetti, grean beans, and a roll. She was reluctant to eat food because she was fatigued after finishing her second walk of the day, had zero appetitie, and was extremely anxious to eat and swallow food for the first time in 18 days. After 15 minutes of having the dinner sit in front of her she decided to give it a try. Go Wendy! She ate half of a nibble of bread, three plain noodles cut (by her mom) into tiny bites, and three small canned grean beans. She swallowed everything just fine. A nutritionist came by and evaluated Wendy tonight and recommended she receive at least 1,800 calories a day. 1,800 calories will be delivered to Wendy through her iv and food. They hope to increase her food calorie intake every day.

Wendy's back is continuing to cause her extreme pain. It was determined today that the pain is being caused by her LARGE incision site. Since the epidural was turned off, the pain in her back and all areas near her incision site has greatly increased. A nurse completely resterilized her incision site tonight. It is imperative that incision site stay free of infection.

Dr. Calhoun has ordered Wendy's pain medication be increased at night so she can get more sleep. She needs to start getting more sleep. Three, two hour stints of sleep is just not enough.

Wendy feels less anxious and fearful.

The Wound V.A.C. is installed successfully and helps remove all infection from her body.

She eats and sleeps more tomorrow.

Her back and incision site pain goes away.

great is thy faithfulness

Wendy's progress has been slow and steady today. She slept well last night, resting for two hours at a time on three different occasions, totaling six incredible hours of sleep!

Her PICC line is working well and the dressings covering the line were changed successfully today.

The GI specialist saw Wendy today and said her belly sounds good. Her bowels were working better today.

Wendy's white blood cell count is down from a 19 to a 14.6 today!

Wendy was seen by an OT and PT today. The OT had Wendy up washing her face and brushing her teeth. Wendy experienced an extreme amount of back pain while up. The pain was so great that they had to give her extra pain medicine through her iv and calm her down with anti-anxiety medicine. The OT said the back pain is not a surprise because she is laying down so much during the day. The pain isn't as great or obvious when she is walking.

Wendy walked well today and continues to break her record. She told her Grandpa Henry on the phone today that she would walk her farthest for him. It took her awhile, but she did it. She added five feet to her last total feet walked.

Marissa, one of Wendy's best friends sent a pair of soft, pink booties for Wendy to wear. These pink booties have cause quite a stir, gaining much popular attention. Everyone comments on the pink booties when they walk in the room. Wendy's new nickname in the ICU is "the gal with the pink booties."

One of Wendy's nurses inquired about Skyler and Jadon today. Wendy shared stories about the boys, without tears. Wendy's mom was happy that she was distracted while talking about the boys and pleased that she got to experience some much needed "mommy mental time."

The milk of magnesium that Wendy is taking made her extremely nauseas today. They had to get anti-nausea medicine into her immediately. Vomiting and aspirating is still NOT an option.

They are still using the procedure, debridement to rid the smaller incision site of dead cells, excess liquid, and infection. The gauze continues to be packed and repacked after full saturation.

A nurse approached Wendy about starting up an all liquid diet again. Wendy is very anxious and is hesitant to eat. She shared with the nurse that she thought the liquid diet had caused the CDF, the extreme stomach pain, the distension, and bowel trouble. The nurse assured her that the food did not cause the CDF and stomach pain, but that in fact the infection in her body was the problem.

Wendy's mom heard her making little sounds today. At first she thought she was trying to tell her something. Wendy was in fact humming the chorus to "Great is Thy Faithfulness." She could only remember some of the words and ended up singing a few lines for her mom. Such beautiful words that came to Wendy in the midst of this tremendous trial. Purifying her heart, mind, and soul.

Wendy isn't scared or anxious about eating again. Pray the liquid doesn't upset her, but brings her good nourishment.

Her back doesn't hurt and she eases into simple jobs like brushing her teeth and washing her face without pain.

Wendy's white blood cell count is down from 23 to 19 today, but she has a fever and it is continuing to creep up. Her bowels are still not working. A GI (gastrointestinal) specialist evaluated Wendy's stomach and bowels today. If antibiotics and other medications don't help her bowels get going there is talk of her needing to have a colonoscopy.

Wendy had her fingernails and toenails done, had her feet soaked, got a back rub, and her hair washed and combed by the nurses. Wendy's dad said, "she's starting to look like Miss America."

She is continuing to walk well and did it twice today. She walked through the ICU double doors and five feet more than her personal record. She is persevering through the pain and physical discomfort.

The staples were removed from both incision sites today. They taped her large surgery incision site closed. It is healing well. The area under her incision site near her groin is still infected. They are utilizing a procedure called debridement to remove the infection. They open the site and pack it full of dry gauze. The gauze soaks up dead cells, excess fluid, and bacteria. They unpacked and repacked the site with gauze twice today. They will most likely do it again tonight when they take an x-ray of her lung. As you can imagine this is extremely uncomfortable and painful. Please pray this procedure doesn't last much longer and that the bacteria and infection is eliminated quickly.

Pain management is a constant and never ending saga for Wendy. Giving her enough pain relief, but not too much that she is groggy requires continual evaluation. They approach her pain relief management hour by hour, day by day. She is still in an extreme amount of pain.

Her NG tube was removed today. Wendy's surgeon Dr. Calhoun came in and said, "Wendy, you look like a rose with a tube up your nose!" before pulling it out. Removal of the tube was extremely painful. Even the nurses grimaced and flinched when it was pulled out. But it is out!

Wendy is not only in physical pain but her heart is in pain too. She misses her babies. She got to see Halloween pictures of the boys tonight and a look of heart brokenness immediately flowed over her face. Being away from her boys has been the hardest part of this entire journey. Separation from them is more painful than the physical pain she continues to endure. She wants them back in her arms.

Tonight's post is not just about Wendy. Wendy and her family have made many incredible connections with doctors, nurses, staff, and other patients and families. CB has been caring for Wendy for the last couple of days. During those days he not only loved on his daughter but connected and witnessed God's love with many others, including patients and their families. Others need your prayer too. Others are fighting for their lives at UC Davis Medical Center. CB has asked for prayer for the following people.

Vincent from Holland was in Sacramento on a work assignment. A generator exploded in his face. 80% of his body is covered in burns. He is currently in the ICU burn unit. He has eleven brothers and sisters that live in Holland. His siblings are coming to the US, two by two to be with their brother.

Hunter an 18 year old has been in the ICU for three weeks. He fell off the hood of a car and was run over while "car surfing." Half of his face was torn off. He is in a coma and had emergency surgery today. His parents and three siblings need your prayers. Hunter needs a miracle.

Ron is unconscious and healing after surgery and a liver transplant. Ron, his wife, and daughter need prayer for healing and their salvation.

Wendy told her dad last night, "if one person comes to know Jesus through this it will have been worth it." How about if two come to know Jesus, in less than 24 hours? Evonne a receptionist and hard working single mom at the Kiwanis Family House rededicated her life to Christ after conversations with CB today. A young man, Michael has been at the UC Davis Medical Center for two weeks now. He has cancer and receives chemotherapy daily. CB met Michael yesterday morning in the cafeteria. He felt the Holy Spirit prompting him to start up a conversation. CB talked to Michael about God being the ultimate healer. He asked Michael if he had every asked Jesus into his heart. Michael had not. After praying for Michael he asked him if he would like to ask Jesus into his heart. He said he'd have to think about it. CB asked if he could see him the following morning, Michael agreed. That night CB, along with some of his close family and friends prayed for Michael. This morning after another conversation about Jesus, Michael's salvation, and more prayer Michael accepted the Lord as his personal Savior.

GOD is so great. HIS plan, so perfect.

And so from the words of CB, "To God be the glory for what he has done. CB and GB love all of you."

Today was challenging, yet one of her best.

The bedside surgery went well. She was heavily sedated and they used local anesthesia on the areas they worked on. It lasted about 45 minutes. Her surgeon and three other doctors opened the smaller incision near her groin and cleaned it out and drained fluid. They left the incision open and packed with gauze. They are changing the gauze every couple of hours. They accessed her right side with a needle and syringe. The fluid from her side (where her right lung used to be) along with the fluid from beneath her incision site will be tested for infection. Her white blood cell count is still up so they know her body is fighting some type of infection. Preliminary test results will be back tomorrow. Final results will take up to three days. Her doctors said she will not remember this afternoon.

Despite the bedside surgery, being heavily sedated most of the afternoon, new iv bags and tubes to tote around, and an open incision packed with gauze Wendy walked her farthest length yet at around 4:45 pm this evening. After her long walk she sat in a chair for a half an hour. She was so exhausted by the time she got back to bed she fell asleep mid-sentence. She slept well for an hour and a half.

Time for the family switcheroo again. Wendy's support team needs your prayers as they travel and regroup. Wade's flight leaves at 6 am tomorrow morning. CB and GB will trade cars and duties in Modesto tomorrow afternoon. Micah is sick...again. He was at UC Davis today but couldn't even go in Wendy's room. The risk of additional infection is just too great. Micah will be heading home to heal and care for their boys. Being away from Wendy is extremely hard on Micah, but he knows it is best for her at this point.

Dr. Calhoun finished up with Wendy's bedside surgery around 1 pm. She was heavily sedated for the procedure. The main purpose of today's procedure was to look for the source of infection she is fighting. They didn't end up draining any excess fluid. They cleaned out the area under her incision near her groin and took some fluid to test. They also took some fluid from inside her chest. They won't have test results back for three days.

Wendy rested well last night. She waited to walk for her dad this morning so she could impress him. He was so proud, coaching her as she walked her farthest distance yet!

Wendy's white blood cell count is up again. They are still looking for an infection. No pneumonia though, which is very good. They are going to start her on a third antibiotic.

Wendy is going to have a bed side surgery done today. They are going to re-open her smaller incision sight and clean it out. A CT scan showed there is a pocket below the incision site. The incision site is hard to the touch which most likely indicates infection. After the surgery they will either leave the incision site open with dry dressings packed into it or install a wound vac that will continue to suction out the fluid from the pocket. Her surgeon is also going to tap into her right side and drain fluid out of the area where her right lung used to be.

Wendy's bowels have stopped working again. Her stomach and bowels need to get back on track and start working efficiently. She is receiving all of her nutrients and fluids through an iv. They would really like to get her back on a liquid diet.

Wendy is anxious. Anxious about her progress, procedures, and the upcoming schedule for the week. Wade postponed his flight home until Tuesday. Wade has the patient advocate job down pat and his presence is helping keep her anxiety at bay.

Wendy had a productive walk today. She matched her farthest length walked. She will have blood work and an x-ray done at midnight. If she is relaxed and sleeping well tonight they won't make her get up to sit in a chair.

The PCA infusion system worked well for Wendy today. She accessed a drip of Fentanyl about every 15 minutes. She said her pain was at a 5 to a 5 1/2 throughout the day.

They are continuing to watch the abscess outside of her stomach. She is only receiving two antibiotics to fight the abscess and they will not add a third antibiotic at this point.

Wendy had a terrible reaction to a drug called Colace that was put into her stomach through her NG tube today. She was extremely nauseas for over an hour. Wendy cannot throw up at this point. Cannot. They needed to give her Colace again later this evening so they partnered it with Zofran an anti-nausea medication and her anti-anxiety medicine, Ativan. The anti-nausea medicine and anti-anxiety medicine helped.

Wendy had a pretty good night. She is on a new anti-anxiety, mild sedative called Ativan. Her unfolding recovery and updates have been getting her worked up and anxious. The Ativan is helping her stay calm and rest. It has been confirmed that the NG tube will have to remain in her nose for at least a few more days. News of the NG tube having to stay in really upset Wendy. To help you better understand her disdain for the NG tube her oncologist said they referred to the NG tube as the "devil's tube" in medical school.

They will monitor her caloric intake carefully today. It is suspected that she is not getting enough calories. She was a bit anemic this morning and will receive 1 unit of blood. Her white blood cell count is down. It dropped from 20.4 to 18 over night. Wonderful news!

Her epidural will be turned off today. They want to see just how much pain relief the epidural delivers. If it doesn't help a significant amount they will remove it once and for all.

Wendy has been receiving Fentanyl in the form of a shot every hour for pain relief. Starting today she will be able to give herself drips of Fentanyl through a patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) infusion system. 1/4 of the amount in the shot will be available for her to self dispense in a drip every 15 minutes. Their hope is that eventually she will be able to push past the 15 minutes, requiring less pain medicine overall.

After further analyzing of her CT scan the doctors have discovered an infected abscess outside of her stomach. There also seems to be fluid collecting near her groin. They will add a new antibiotic in addition to the two she is already taking in hopes that the antibiotics will kill the infectious organisms. If the antibiotics don't work they'll have to drain the abscess. If that doesn't work they mentioned surgery. Surgery is a last resort. The word "surgery" made Wendy's face drop and she was instantly filled with anxiety.

Wendy's physical therapy homework today is to walk to the double doors at the end of the ICU hall. She was resting so well last night that they let her sleep through walking or sitting up. It is imperative she be up today.

Wendy and Wade had a good conversation this morning. She was lucid and very present. Even in extreme pain she is still the thoughtful, selfless Wendy. She was brainstorming projects or things to do for the doctors and nurses once she is out of the hospital. She said it has to be something "really cool".

The Beckett family exchange is happening this afternoon. Wade flies out of Sacramento to L.A. at 3:30 pm. Wendy's dad, CB will take Wade to the airport and then return to the hospital to help care for Wendy through Wednesday. Grammy (Georgia) will be on grandma duty with the boys. Micah will be bouncing back and forth from Fresno, to Madera, and back to Sacramento trading off between wearing his husband and dad hats.

From the mouth of Wendy, "last night was not great, but not terrible." This is good!

She ended up having the CT scan of her chest and abdomen done last night after all. The scan lasted from 10:45 pm to 12 am. CT results this morning show that she still has a lot of air in her stomach. It is necessary for the NG (Nasogastric) tube to be put back in her nose to help get rid some of the excess air and pressure in her stomach. News of the NG tube having to be put back in made Wendy cry (her first tears since the surgery). Her nose is so sore and raw. They are going to put some lytocaine in her nose to help numb it. She is so distraught and fearful over this tube being inserted back into her nose.

After her CT scan last night she was given Benadryl. She had her best sleep yet! She slept from 2 - 4:30 am.

The final blood culture testing for CDF came back negative. One positive and two negatives. They are going to continue giving her the antibiotics, Vancomycin and Flagyl because they seem to be helping her overall condition.

They will most likely remove her epidural tomorrow because it is coming up on the two week mark. If it is kept in much longer it could become infected.

Her heart and lung are sounding good. Her bowels are sounding less hyperactive, which is a good thing.

The following is an excerpt from an email sent by Wendy's dad, CB.

"Grammy is home! What smiles on two happy little faces when Georgia arrived safely home. After many days in ICU with Wendy, she is home for a few days. Only you mothers and grandmothers can understand what Georgia is going through - her baby in so much pain day after day. Thursday was one of the toughest days for both Wendy and Georgia - thank you so for your prayers and deep concern and love. Wade flew in from LA this morning and will be with his sister who he loves so much this weekend. He will meet with the doctors every morning and the blog will be updated daily. I will go back Sunday to UC Davis and stay a few days with our beautiful daughter – and pray with her, encourage her, love her and let her know hundreds of people are praying for her and her family. She is strong, brave and will overcome this challenge of life with God's help and continued support. God will use her in ways that time will only tell. It was such a bonding time with Skyler and Jadon this week we made 10 trips back and forth from Madera to Fresno. They are so good and are up to the task at hand. Where do three year olds get all these questions- like "Why do the mannequins at Kohls not have heads? The ones at Old Navy have heads." We looked at everything to do with trains at three Targets - we know what to buy for Christmas and birthdays for the next five years.Wendy is doing much better this evening and we know God continues to do a miracle in her life. Georgia and I thank you so much for the cards, letters, emails and phone calls - your prayers, kind words, and LOVE give us daily HOPE. To our families, friends, neighbors, churches through out the state, school districts - all of you."

Today was a pretty good day. A fighting Wendy, prayer, and God...a perfect trio for recovery.

Wendy walked the farthest yet! After her walk she sat in a chair for a half an hour. All thirty minutes were painful, exhausting and she continually asked to get back in bed. She pushed through and worked hard today.

So far Wendy has had a negative and a positive reading for CDF. One more test, one last result to break the tie. They considered giving her another CT scan today, but in the end decided against it because she was so exhausted from all of her physical activity. She will most likely have the CT scan done tomorrow morning.

The pain management team now has Wendy on Fetanyl. This drug is commonly used to treat chronic pain. On a scale of 1-10, Wendy's pain has ranged from a "4" to a "6" since being on this new drug. It seems to be keeping the pain measurement of a "10" (where she's usually at) away.

Her white blood cell count is the same. Her blood pressure and blood sugar is holding steady.

Wendy did not have any extreme hot spells today! What a difference this made in her day.

All tubes have been removed from Wendy's mouth and nose. She feels free!

Wendy looked in the mirror for the first time yesterday since her surgery. Previous to today they had advised against her seeing herself because they didn't want her image to be discouraging. She was SO swollen and looked nothing like herself. The beautiful Wendy we all know and love is slowly but surely starting to come back.

Wendy's brother Wade was able to feed her some very tasty ice chips this evening. Hopefully she's close to being on an all liquid diet again.

She will have her blood drawn at midnight. Afterwards they will give her a Benadryl and hope and pray she sleeps until 4 am when she has her daily lung x-ray done. This is an incredible opportunity for Wendy to get her longest stint of sleep yet. With the extreme heat spells at bay, her pain somewhat under control, and a Benadryl, please pray she sleeps all four hours.

Praise Jesus and thank you to all of Wendy's prayer warriors! Wendy has shown tremendous improvement since last night. Last night was a low and scary point in her recovery. For all those that prayed with fervor and diligence, her family sends you their most appreciative thanks. They feel your prayers and are witnessing God's immediate healing as a result.

Wendy's brother Wade arrived today to take over for Georgia. Please pray for Georgia as she travels home tonight to regroup, physically and emotionally before heading back Sunday. Continue to pray for Micah as he fights off illness and cares for his wife.

Her blood will be cultured three different times as they test for CDF. The first test came back negative. The doctors still think it is CDF that is causing so much pain, the elevated white blood cell count, and distension of her stomach. It is very possible that the first test was a false negative.

The pain management team has been working hard to help Wendy feel less pain, but also keep her coherent. They've found that multiple pain medications put into her body through various ways seem to work the best for her. Currently they are giving her pain medicine in a shot, a steady amount through an iv, and a slow drip through an iv.

Wendy's homework for today is to walk four times as much as she has ever done before, even though she is in an extreme amount of pain. Walking and being upright is crucial to keeping her lung clear and to her overall recovery. She didn't get up at all yesterday because of her gut, potential CDF issue. It is imperative she walk today.

So far Wendy has not had any extreme heat spells today! She has usually had multiple spells by this time. Please pray that she not have any more. Pray the heat spells are behind her, and a thing of the past.

Wendy's mom washed and braided Wendy's hair this morning. It seemed to boost Wendy's spirits and relieve her psychologically.

Wendy needs your diligent, heartfelt prayers right now at this very moment more than ever. Family, friends, fans of Wendy please get on your hands and knees and pray for healing over Wendy.

Wendy's mom called to give the nightly report in tears. For any of you who know Wendy's mom, Georgia Beckett, you know she is a strong woman of God. She has shown such composure, strength, and optimism through Wendy's surgery and recovery. Tonight she is broken. She is exhausted and in pain from watching her daughter hurt for so long. She said tonight the only thought that brings her comfort is knowing that our Heavenly Father knows what she is going through. Pray for Georgia, a mother wishing more than anything that she could take her daughter's place.

Micah is feeling sick. He is taking over-the-counter medicine, hoping to keep illness at bay. Please pray he doesn't get sick. Wendy needs him to be physically present.

Her white blood cell count continued to rise into the night. They think they might have found the infection. They speculate she has Clostridium Difficile (CDF). CDF is a naturally occurring species of bacteria in the body that can grow out of control when you are on some types of antibiotics. They are going to hit her hard with Vancomycin a powerful broad spectrum antibiotic that treats Gram-positive bacteria. They will also give her Flagyl, an antibiotic used for treating infection of the colon.

Wendy is back to NPO. No food, drink, or ice.

Her heart rate is up and her breathing is very labored.

She is very drugged out right now, uncomfortable, experiencing constant, lengthy heat spells, she can't lay still, she is in pain from head to toe. Wendy R. Manzo needs your prayers.

The only bright spot today was that she had her favorite day nurse. She'll have her favorite night nurse tonight. Pray for these two nurses. Give them wisdom and guidance to best care for Wendy.

back on antibiotics

Wendy's white blood cell count is continuing to climb so she is back on antibiotics. They are still trying to find a source of infection. She is having her blood cultured and her thyroid checked today in hopes of finding a cause.

Her lung seems to be tired today. Her breathing has been more labored all day.

Wendy continues to enjoy a liquid diet. She had broth and jello for breakfast and lunch. She said jello has never tasted so good. She has to sip and eat extremely slowly so she doesn't get nauseous. Aspirating is not an option.

Doctors are still baffled by the extreme hot spells Wendy continues to experience. The overwhelming heat is coming more often and lasting for longer periods of time.

A physical therapist came in and checked Wendy's right leg today. The PT thought the majority of her leg looked really good. There aren't any additional locations on her leg with nerve damage. This nerve damage could be permanent. Please pray that the feeling in her leg comes back.

The sleeping pill they gave Wendy last night did not work. She only slept for an hour and a half total. She is having a hard time blocking out the constant sounds that fill the ICU. She is going to try and wear headphones tonight and listen to soothing music. They are going to give her a Benadryl tonight to see if that helps her sleep. The nurses are stressing the importance of Wendy being awake during the day and asleep at night. AM/PM confusion often plagues ICU patients in the hospital and it can continue after they are released. It is hard to reverse this confusion.

Wendy was given a 4 ounce glass of grape juice this afternoon that she conservatively sipped from 3:00 to 5:45 pm. Because she did such a great job drinking it and didn't feel nauseous she graduated from no diet to an all liquid diet! She thoroughly enjoyed broth and jello for dinner this evening.

A nurse from the Inter visual Radiology department came up to check on Wendy's PICC line today. The PICC line is looking good.

Wendy's white blood cell count is still elevated. The doctors are unable to find any signs of infection so they are discontinuing antibiotics.

Wendy walked well with the help of a walker again today. She only had to stop once to sit down. Her right leg is still numb. When Wendy was put on the heart and lung machine during surgery they had tried to access her femoral artery, without success. Wendy's surgeon suspects a nerve in/near the femoral artery was damaged. He doesn't expect the nerve to be permanently damaged. She will definitely need physical therapy to get her leg back to full use without numbness and it could take months of work to get there.

Wendy's family asked her surgeon when she would be released from the ICU. His response, "I won't let her leave here until she's ready and she's not ready."

It is imperative that Wendy get more, quality sleep. She was given a cup of warm tea and a sleeping pill tonight. They are hopeful that the tea will soothe her raw, painfully sore throat and the sleeping aid will help her rest. She is still in an extreme amount of pain from head to toe and is having a hard time sleeping. The longest period of sleep she got last night was 15 minutes.

The severe hot flashes are getting more peculiar, and are occurring for longer periods of time. This afternoon she had them at 3:10, 4:45, 6:20, and 8:03 pm. Each one lasted 45 minutes to an hour. She has little reprieve in between these episodes and they completely wear her out. The hot flashes have affected her entire body up until today. She only experienced the "on fire" sensation on her right side today, her incision side. Her surgeon, the doctors, and nurses are completely baffled and still can't explain the extreme heat. If the extreme hot flashes would stop she'd be more successful at everything. These episodes are exhausting her.

They figure out what is causing the extreme hot flashes and that they stop.

Her right leg heals quickly and that the feeling comes back.

Her extremely sore throat and thrush go away.

Last night was another rough night for Wendy. The pain management team will re-evaluate Wendy today. They are hopeful to find the perfect balance of pain medication. She is still in a tremendous amount of pain and continues to have extreme hot flashes. She had one almost every hour last night. Wendy's team is baffled by the "on fire all over" sensation she continues to experience. They aren't sure if the reaction is due to a medicine she is taking or if her body is just confused and fighting itself. She continues to experience "ICU psychosis" at night.

Wendy is be allowed to drink small sips of water today as they start to graduate her beyond ice chips. She started receiving nutrients through her PICC line last night.

Her intestines and bowels are waking up! Woohoo!

It is getting more difficult for the nurses to draw Wendy's blood. As soon as the PICC line has been flushed and is more established they should be able to start drawing blood from it.

rough day

Overall today was a rough day. Every procedure that was done on Wendy today was painful and every part of her body hurts. Her white blood cell count is still up. The doctors have not been able to find the infection. They are grasping at straws.

Wendy is still experiencing EXTREME hot flashes. She goes from a normal temperature to a pink faced, burning hot, on fire temperature. Wendy's mom fills surgical gloves with ice and then puts them on her forehead, legs, and arms. Cool wash rags are then placed on top of the icy gloves. Once the burning sensation passes Wendy is back to a normal temperature. The doctors have not been able to figure out what is causing the extreme hot flashes.

Her throat is still raw and painfully sore. The antibiotics and UC Davis Magic Mouthwash have yet to touch the thrush.

A praise to report! Wendy walked more than 24 feet today with a walker but without a physical therapist locking her knee! Her right leg is still numb but she was able to put some pressure on it. Praise the Lord!

The epidural Wendy has had since surgery had to come out today. It wasn't working effectively anymore. The new epidural is lower in her back. The hope is that she'll get better pain relief with this lower placement.

She really needs to start receiving nutrients, but food is just not a possibility yet. Please, please, please pray that the PICC line is successfully inserted today. Pray they find a strong, accessible vein. Pray that vein is strong, healthy, and will hold the PICC line for as long as she needs it.

Wendy's stomach is still tight and her bowels and intestines are not working yet. Movement in her belly area is a HUGE prayer request right now.

Wendy experiences something called "ICU psychosis" every time she doses off for a lengthy period of time. She sees, hears, and imagines bad things going on. When she wakes up she works very hard at trying to figure out what went on and how to get rid of the thoughts. She thinks all of the nurses are mad at her because she thinks she is a "bad patient". She apologizes every time a doctor or nurse comes in and has to perform a procedure. Even though they reassure her she is doing a great job and that she is not a bad patient, she is genuinely concerned about her "burden" on everyone. Wendy's mom said it is funny, (in a not funny way) to watch and listen to Wendy try to take care of the people in her room. Wendy's mom said she has dark circles under her eyes, dilated pupils, a swollen face, and acts very drugged (because she is) but is micromanaging the nurses and her family. She asks if people have eaten, used the restroom, taken a break, etc. Taking care of and worrying about others even though she is the patient and fighting for her life. So Wendy.

The ICU staff is trying to get Wendy accustom to the difference between day and night again. They want her body to get used to being awake during the day and asleep at night.

not so super motrin

The "Super Motrin" didn't work. She is on a new narcotic. She isn't experiencing as many hallucinations but is extremely groggy. Managing her pain is something the doctors are constantly working on.

The PICC line failed. Wendy's veins are small, weak, and damaged. She is going to IR (Inter Visual Radiology) tomorrow where they will use more advanced machines to search for a good vein.

90% of after surgery fluids are usually consumed or released by the body naturally 3-5 days after surgery. Wendy's body did not get rid of the fluids. A tube was inserted in her left side today to release some excess fluid. 920 cc's (close to a liter) of liquids were absolved. The combination of a surplus of fluids and the confusing side affects from the narcotics left Wendy feeling like she was going to explode. It is a definite praise that so much fluid was released today.

Wendy still has thrush in her mouth. Her blood sugar is high and she has been receiving insulin shots. Wendy still receives a breathing treatment every 6 hours. The duo-med Wendy receives in the breathing treatment goes to the poorly profused areas of her lung, helping with infection prevention and inflation.

Wendy's bowels and intestines are still asleep. Pray they start moving. She is very uncomfortable.

They find a good vein tomorrow and the PICC line is a success.

Let's start off with the praise of all praises! Wendy walked 24 feet with the help of a walker, two physical therapists, a nurse, and her mom! One of the therapists crawled along on the floor locking her knee so she could bare weight on it. The nurse held the tubes and lines, while pushing her oxygen tank. She only had to sit once, walked all the way to the nurses station and back to her room. By the time she made it back to her bed she was exhausted, but she did it!

Wendy's oncologist/surgeon is back in town! There will be some big changes today. First of all they are going to put a chest tube in to drain fluids near her lung. She will be sedated during the procedure. The tube will allow for fluid to constantly drain. The tube will be painful and uncomfortable. Second, her surgeon has decided to take her off of narcotics. She is going to start receiving a pain medication that is like a "Super Motrin". She will receive the "Super Motrin" through the epidural and iv. It is important that she continue to receive pain medications through two sites. She is still experiencing a tremendous amount of pain. The narcotics are causing Wendy to experience psychosis through hallucinations, hyperventilation, and confusion. Lastly, her surgeon has decided to have a PICC line put in. Wendy will receive nutrients, including proteins, fats, and medicine through the PICC line. Wendy hasn't had any nutrients since before her surgery. Her organs need good nutrients to continue to heal.

A hematoma has developed near Wendy's incision sight. Treatment can involve draining the accumulated blood. Thankfully at this time the hematoma is only creating minor pressure to the incision site and is not infected. As long as it remains as it is, they will just monitor it and it should go away within a few weeks.

Wendy's stomach is tight and distended. Her stomach and intestines are a mess right now. They are giving her treatments to help her bowels wake up. The distension has started to compress her lung. It is imperative her bowels start moving. Wendy's mom said, "she'll gets starts on her chart if her bowels can wake up today."

And so another day of recovery comes to an end. Wendy had a bit of a scare towards the end of the night. She and her mom were sitting quietly in the room when all of a sudden Wendy started hyperventilating because it felt like the entire right side of her body was being inflated. A team of doctors and nurses flooded her room and gave her numbing medicine to help with the odd and frightening sensation.

Pray Wendy gets some good sleep tonight. Her next tests aren't until 4 am, so hopefully she will get to rest. Peaceful moments are few and far between in the ICU. Wendy is connected to wires, ivs, lines, tubes, catheters, and cuffs. She wears a cuff on each leg that inflates, and deflates to help with circulation. The cuffs are on all through the night. Her room only has three walls for easy access and close monitoring. Quiet, rest, and peacefulness is close to non-existent in the ICU. Despite all of the craziness that is the ICU, please pray that she experiences some peace tonight before those next tests at 4 am.

They are starting Wendy on a new pain medicine tonight. Wendy is still complaining of pain, pressure, itchiness, and overall discomfort. She will receive the new medicine through her epidural and an iv. Their hope is that his new drug will get to more parts of her body. Without good pain management she hurts and can't relax, which makes it difficult for her to heal.

Wendy is working hard to move her left leg and foot. She has been scooting it from side to side in bed. She knows how important movement is to circulation and she is very anxious to start improving. That Wendy, she's a fighter!

It is imperative, essential, crucial, necessary that Wendy stand (with a walker), and then eventually without a walker, and ultimately starts walking SOON! Let's pray she stands with the help of a walker tomorrow!

Wendy's white blood cell count is up even higher today. The doctors put her on an antibiotics until they can figure out why her count is up. They performed scans and took cultures today to determine if she has an infection somewhere in her body.

She is still dozing a lot and seems to be in a dream-like state. She has yet to experience a deep sleep. She has dark circles under her eyes and is in much need of some solid rest.

Her stomach is hard, inflated, and is causing her a lot of pain. The pressure is starting to push on her lung. It is imperative that her bowels begin to work. They will take some pretty forceful (and uncomfortable) measures this afternoon to help move things along.

Skyler and Jadon have hardly asked about Wendy or Micah. Wendy's mom believes that the Holy Spirit is protecting their bodies and minds from feeling worry, confusion, or loneliness.
The boys have been passed between family members over the past week. So far their busy little schedules have run smoothly.

uc davis magic mouthwash

Wendy got to take her first sip of something liquid tonight and she chose...grape juice! She was only allowed 4 ounces and she had to take one drink at a time over a four and a half hour period. Her response to her first drink, "oh that's sooooo good."

Wendy has a fever and thrush in her mouth. Her mouth is painfully sore and extremely raw. They are giving her something called "UC Davis Magic Mouthwash" to help combat the thrush. She can't decide what is more painful, her mouth and throat or her incision site. The doctors are still trying to figure out how to relieve her pain. They hope to get that figured out soon so they can move into the pain management phase.

The greatest consecutive amount of sleep Wendy has had since surgery has been 45 minutes. She is constantly being interrupted by doctors, nurses, tests, vital checks, medicine, pain, itchiness, and an irregular body temperature. Wendy's body temperature is completely irregular. Her face and head are burning up and her feet are ice cold. She goes from laying in her bed without a sheet and a fan on, to asking to have her body covered up and complaining of freezing temperatures.

Wendy receives breathing treatments every six and a half hours. Her breathing treatment goals are:
1. The left lung inflates as she exhales.
2. Her lung is hydrated.
3. She coughs up anything in the lung.

Wendy's mom asked her if she had any specific prayer requests tonight. The following requests are directly from the raw mouth of Wendy.

Wendy says, "pray"...

My mouth and throat are not sore.
My body temperature is regulated.
My bowels would wake up.
I will walk and stand tomorrow.

Wendy was up in a chair from 6:30 - 9:30 am this morning, her longest stint up yet! However, her sitting came to an abrupt end when they started a new pain, anti-itch, inflammation medication through her epidural. Once the medicine entered her body she felt like she was dying and burning inside. They stopped the medicine immediately and moved her back to her bed. Half an hour later she seemed to be doing better and was resting.

Wendy's white blood cell count is up. One of the doctors suggested draining some of the fluid from around her lung. Her surgeon (who is at a different surgery at the moment but on 24/7 call for Wendy) said absolutely not. Draining the fluid around her lung requires insertion of a needle too close to her remaining lung. It is too risky of a procedure and should only be done in a life-threatening situation. Their hope and our prayer is that her body starts getting rid of fluids on it own, more quickly. They continue to push diuretics through ivs to help her pass
liquids more quickly. That extra fluid throughout her body needs to be gone!

The doctors and nurses still haven’t found the right medicine to completely block her pain. It is a delicate balance, alleviating the pain and pushing her body to heal.

itchy and numb

Wendy is talking, but her voice is not her "normal Wendy voice." Doctors decided to take a peek at her vocal chords today. The procedure required her to be momentarily taken off of oxygen so that a small camera could be inserted into her nose and down her throat. During the test her blood pressure dropped dangerously low. They were concerned with how quickly her blood pressure dropped and by how low it got so they decided to do an ultrasound of her lung. There was fluid on her lung, but not enough to have to go in and physically remove it. They are hoping her body will start to get rid of fluids more quickly. Standing up will help move that long, but her right leg is still numb. A physical therapist confirmed today that her leg is improving, but more improvement is needed in order for her to be able to put pressure on it. In addition, the more fluids her body gets rid of the more her joints will loosen up which will help with flexibility and movement. They wanted her up and walking around yesterday. Sitting up is just not cutting it. She needs to be standing and walking in order for her body's fluids and blood to be circulating well.

Wendy started breathing treatments. She receives them every six hours. They are hyper inflating her lungs to help prevent pneumonia and infection.

The doctors want to remove a line in her neck that was used during surgery. However, her potassium, calcium, and electrolyte levels have been below normal today. They can't remove the line until her levels go up. She will be receiving all three (potassium, calcium, and electrolytes) through the night in hopes they can replenish the levels and remove the line tomorrow.

Wendy is itchy all over due to some of the medications that are being given to her through the epidural. Benadryl is helping, but it makes her groggier than she already is. Wendy is in good spirits when she is awake, but comes and goes between a dream like state and reality due to the heavy medications she's on. Wendy's mom said she believes her grogginess is a "blessing in disguise." She hopes Wendy won't remember the intense pain and difficult details about these first days of hard recovery. Also, the days in the ICU are long and Wendy's unawareness seems to help her minutes and hours pass by more swiftly.

Wendy's surgery and the removal of three large thymomas was the first for her oncologist/ surgeon. He usually removes one, maybe two small thymomas through tiny incisions. Wendy's surgery will be one for the textbooks. Wendy's thymomas were the largest he had ever removed. Removal of the thymomas required a large incision, sawing through ribs, removal of a lung, and reconstruction of the diaphragm and the lining around her heart. This was a HUGE surgery, which means she has a long road to recovery. Her doctors are working hard to manage her pain, yet they simultaneously have to focus on pushing her to heal and recover.

She can get out of bed and become more mobile.

Pray for the doctors' wisdom and discernment.

Wendy's potassium, calcium, and electrolyte levels go up so that line can be removed.

Her lung and body is protected from any form of infection.
